Can they be renewed? or they follow the namerzero way?
I looked at the whois of some kg domains and all expire 1 year after they were registered. (actually 15 days before one year  )

No one knows... Nobody's had one for a year yet.

Some of my domains expire at the end of the year, although registered in February (and listed with whois), some expire exactly after 1 year.

I would suggest that free domains expire at the end of the year, so it is easier to renew them. How does the renewal work with free *.*.ru-domains?

Which is why I would urge caution if you're thinking of going all out to use your domain for any serious purpose.

(After all, if you have to eventually pay for something, you might as well just pay for a .com, .net or .org domain from the start. Unless of course you live in that country.)

I have an idea, If everybody posts the date his domain exipires, the person who's exipires the fastest can tell us then how it went. My date:
Record expires on Thu Apr 4 23:41:08 2002

Albert

I believe that there is no expiration date earlier than the end of the year. Does anyone's whois show an earlier date?

And again my question. How does the renewal work with *.*.ru domains? I think there is a good chance, that they make it similar.

Someone must have had a *.*ru for more than a year. Just to reregister or what?

He - and what does that mean? That they won't even expire? These oracle answers...

Maybe if someone knows russian they can send an email in russian and you might get a more detailed reply.

they won't expire.... allthough it's a sub-domain.

Albert

Is this an answer of kg? whois says, that they expire.

They probably mean that nothing will change. They won't take them away from us and they will stay free. Would be nice with a more explicit answer though.

fatman
June 6th, 2001, 08:30
Actually, even if they give an explicit answer, it does not guarantee anything. Since it is free, they can later say that due to some reason or other, they have to terminate this arrangement when the domain name expires but you can keep that name for a small fee. Having said that, I suppose that since they have stated that it'll remain free, there is a chance that it will be free in the near future (until such time they find that it's more lucrative to get people to pay).

(But I personally still prefer to register .com, .org, .net domains for serious sites. But then of course, I'm not situated in K... [ whatever that country is - forgot how to spell it ].)

Albert
June 6th, 2001, 12:11
AFAIK Bulgarian domains were free at the start, but then they changed their mind and you had to pay for it. But those domains which were signed-up for free are still free.

I agree, for a site which earns money, you should choose a com/net/org, but why shouldn't one use a *.*.kg as an entry page for a com-domain? IMO there is no big difference to co.uk-domains which cost money. (ok, uk is better known than kg)

Mandrake

It's just one letter shorter! :)

I've always wondered why some countries use .co.xx and others are .com.xx ... Except the jokers at .mu which seem to use both, and then forget about it.

In the case of com.ru, com.kg and so on I guess they just want to mimic the well known extensions for their giveaways. Is it only US that doesn't have a country name domain btw?

In Sweden only companies that fill certain criteria can buy second level domains. The rest of us have to use third level: *.pp.se. And they are expensive too. Here .nu is popular since "nu" in Swedish means "now".

Albert
June 6th, 2001, 13:56
us-domains are free for us-citizens, but very rarely. Have a look at http://www.nic.us/

BTW what is the price for a nu-domain? I searched a lot for cc-TLDs, but found that com are cheaper most times. I can't imagine to pay for a nu-domain, if a com is cheaper.

meow
June 6th, 2001, 14:07
Holy smoke. There are .us domains! I've never seen one. Why don't people use them if they're free? confused:
Don't know the lowest price fo a .nu but easyspace.com takes $30.

Albert
June 6th, 2001, 14:44
Would you like to have a 4th-level-domain, which is hard to remember?

http://www.nic.us/faq.html

Jane Doe in Canoga Park, CA = jane-doe.canoga-park.ca.us

Bob's Shoe Shop in Toledo, OH = bobs-shoe-shop.toledo.oh.us

City Hall in New Orleans, LA = ci.new-orleans.la.us

Monroe School District in MT = monroe.k12.mt.us

meow
June 6th, 2001, 15:27
Ooops! Didn't read too good. Worse than our .pp.se. :p
Just curious, is this thing new or have they always been there?

Mandrake
June 6th, 2001, 16:19
.us domains have always been there, but the naming structure is so heinous that no one really gets one other than for a novelty... (www.alexia.phoenix.az.us)... Mainly government agencies (i.e.: cities, states...) use them. There's been talk of restructuring them... (i.e.: having .co.us, etc.), but nothing's come about so far.

BTW... If anyone's interested, www.registerus.com is the best place to get one.

Albert
June 6th, 2001, 16:31
Are *.pp.se free like *.pp.ru and can foreigners register them?

meow
June 6th, 2001, 16:47
Forget it. They cost an arm and a leg. I haven't searched for an international registrar that register them. It's possible it's cheaper outside Sweden. There are companies here that gladly bill dumbers $100-200 and more to get a .com for them.

Albert
June 6th, 2001, 16:56
Not only in Sweden ;)

Innocentius
June 7th, 2001, 07:50
i guess *.kg's do expire, but not *.com.kg's

LeX
June 7th, 2001, 20:06
They probably won't expire at all, because nobody would be fighting over *.*.kg's, so there's no point in expiring. ;)

Albert
June 8th, 2001, 03:37
In general, you are right probably, but did you see who owns microsoft.com/net/org.kg, while microsoft.kg is clear. Is there a way to check, which domains belong to a pid?

Albert
June 8th, 2001, 03:44
BTW I found another funny thing:

Domain MICROSOFT.KG
...
Record created: Tue Jan 16 10:31:46 2001
...
Record expires on Sat Oct 27 23:59:00 2001

meow
June 8th, 2001, 12:49
I wouldn't register Microsoft anything anywhere. The name probably protected by the laws of every country on earth. Check billgates.*.kg...I didn't dare to take them. :D

I think they just give out *.*.kg free so that .kg becomes a better known extension. I would like to think they also do it from som alturistic point of view to allow further free access to the web for individuals/orgs that cannot afford to register do not have a credit card or are in other ways excluded from the main stream .com world. Anyhow I think they are pretty cool and that it is a shame such practices are not more wide spread on the web. *.*.ru are to difficult to register with all this needing a passport stuff kg has it about right

BTW what is the price for a nu-domain? I searched a lot for cc-TLDs, but found that com are cheaper most times. I can't imagine to pay for a nu-domain, if a com is cheaper.

Albert -

A .nu domain costs $60 for two years, $85 for three years, $110 for four, $130 for five, and $250 for six.

Check out NuNames.Nu (http://nunames.nu/) for more information.

Hope that helps :)

Believe it or not, Navin is a girls' name as well :) I take the Arabic meaning, not the Indian one.

*.*.kg is the equivalent of DHS, so they won't expire
