I'm really sick of hosting these 7 hits/day sites. What kind of site could I make that would actually recieve users and be legal. Anyone have any ideas/experiences?

Maybe you're not advertising your site to the right people. Or just don't have something that would make people put a link to your site from theirs or simply wanna come back for more

yeah, you need to have what people would want to see or read, on a daily basis. frequent updates are a must. pretty obvious if you ask me.
and sites/updates like "today i slept late!"..."school sucks, so i skipped it... tee hee"... or "i got some new shoes"... that won't cut it. e/n sites are the devil's work.
start a site about your favorite band or something. worked for me

I don't know if it would be called 'a lot' but my site averages between 800,000 and 900,000 pageviews monthly. For the most part it's a fantasy art site, but advertisers don't seem to like it too much.
The ad revenue isn't even paying the cost of the web space. Such is life.

I agree with the above about finding a nitch. I'm trying a new direction that doesn't need a zillion of hits to make it work. I've been developing a simple, small site that is very narrow in client appeal (http://www.movemeto.com). I don't get a ton of page views (currently around 200 per day and building) but I do get a real specific, quality client on the site. It's easy to focus ads and I don't need a lot of traffic to support the site with very low bandwidth. Also, not much competition from other similar sites.

About the topsite thing, the topsite place nor me have anything to do with whoever posted that picture. I didn't even know they allowed sites like that, and I am emailing them about it and I have the updated page on my hard drive but F2S (my host) is having problems (everytime i try and send it says:
150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for download.html.
Connection closed by remote host.). Occassionally F2S does that but I will have that link removed as soon as i can.
And hey Rick, what's your secret

Hey, Chris! I spent about 4 minutes on your site, just looking around. Took a minute or so before I realized you have a HTML tutorial. Wasn't until the last minute I realized that you are offering a free HTML editor (people don't READ web pages, you know).
I found the download links - BUT! What kind of editor is this? WYSYSIWYG? Text? What features? What does it look like? Is it bloated? How big is the file? Do I have use for it? Do I want it?
I don't know. Because you don't tell. Do. Description, screen shots, the works. And see to it that people get what you have on your site in 5 seconds. Make the info that you offer a HTML editor and a HTML tutorial a H1 heading and the search engines may see the site in a different light. Don't hide the good content.
Ahem. Just some suggestions. ;)

Chris, if you have to ask people *what* to put on your site, obviously you are hitting a blank wall. If you have no reason to go online, why should you? I'm not saying you shouldn't, but if you create a site with little content, you shouldn't expect a million hits.
If you are creating a website to make $$$, why not just do what some people here are doing? Create a fake clickheretofind.com link-peppered "The Best Pokemon/Britney Naked!" site around.
There are very few multihit type of sites around. One is, of course, porn - although repeat visitors can be very low. Another is ezine with lots of contents, updated daily. Third are novelty sites (psychoexgirlfriend.com, bonsai kittens, amihotornot.com, etc). You can try the last option if you can create a fancy interactive site using CGI, PHP, etc. Otherwise, content is the way to go. (I can say porn too, but your parents may hate me for saying that.)
If you want a quality website, start with your own hobby. You have an opinion on something? Politics? Sports? Put them up. Something that tells people about you, your personality, et cetera. From there, maybe you can soon branch out into a more solid content site.
(Before you ask, my site gets around 250 visitors a day.)

I dunno... I don't use flash, or any other fancy gimmicks. I haven't submitted to any search engines, and I don't advertise the site. I guess people just like the pictures. :D

Is that 'hits' or 'pageviews'?

Pageviews. I havent looked at the stats recently, but we were getting 34 mill several months ago. Probably much more now.

All right, I'll help you save bandwidth by letting you redirect a couple million to me. Really, I don't mind, go ahead. ;)
