alright, so i've been on various shared hosting plans for years, and am looking for a dedicated server. price isn't as big of an issue as other things, because i obviously want a dedicated server for its reliability. so if i am with a cheap host, i still want them to be reliable.

i've tried CIHost, and while they offer a lot for their price, and good reliability, they don't offer a lot of help setting you up, and i do not know much unix. since i want to host multiple domains and whatnot, its been very difficult. they don't offer a real control panel, just some proprietary thing they created themselves that didnt work half the time. it's been very difficult. they only help you with technical PROBLEMS on their support lines, not questions on how to do things.

i tried ServerMatrix, and even though WHM was installed and everything, i was having difficulty using it. i couldn't get a domain to resolve to the server. then someone told me i needed to contact ServerMatrix and have them set up a domain every time i needed it. but since i have several domains and am always adding new ones, this is kind of ridiculous.

i'd like to try 2advanced.net, because ive always loved their design work, but a) they're freaking expensive, and b) i'm not even sure they're that reliable for their price because they just opened their doors. who knows how long they'll be in business with those prices?

so does anyone know of a host that is reliable, allows for multiple IP addresses/domains, at least 40gb of space, and a very easy-to-use control panel, like cpanel or ensim or something where i won't have to contact them to set up domains for me, and where i wont have to login using ssh and set up everything using unix commands? remember, reliability is key for me, moreso than cost. if you know someone whos expensive but they are completely reliable and easy to use, then let me know.

thanks so much, ive been looking for so long and dont know where to go.

I think you need a fully managed server, otherwise you will have to use ssh, for checking your server, keep your server up to date. WHM or any hosting control panel is not enough.

also, how about your server requirements?

If you get WHM then you'll have to do the initial setup including nameservers & resolvers, server name loads of other bits and bobs. If you get that right it'll take a couple of days for DNS to propegate then simply setup packages and accounts. :)

sorry if I'm breaking any rules, but EBG Hosting provides this dedicated servers for pretty competive pricing. We do use WHM/Cpanel if you choose to add it to your server. You could also pick up an Autopilot license to simplify the sign-up process of your accounts if you're interested in that as well. You will be required to use SSH at some points to manage your server, but WHM takes care of a lot of the time consuming tasks of updating the server. Scripts are installed to check automatically and where you can activate them with just clicking a button in WHM or typing a simple command in ssh.

I'm also willing to personally advise you via AOL Instant Messenger if you want. Reason I'm getting so personally involved is because I've been in the same possition you're in now. I think linux is a great os and all savvy pc users should have some experience in it. I think EBG Hosting could help you out. Dealing with hosting with WHM isnt' as difficult as most think. Reply, pm, or email me (fastest response) if you're interested. Again, I'm sorry I've i've violated a forum rule. Been awhile since I've read them. :wink2:

Well server matrix is a good one, don't know why you had problems with them. For dedicated server, I would suggest try SM again. If you want server administration, I can do it. Contact me on AIM : MaharashtraM if interested

Decker,

What abt securing the server ? Just setting up DNS isnt enough.

That was just a short list of the setting up, securing it using SNORT and all the usual is the next set of tasks. Or done the other way round whichever your preference is. Hardening and removal of unnecessary components are standard tasks but Don't want to scare the poor soul ;)

The WHM stuff was mainly to address the problems with DNS & domain setup they are having :)

alright, well i havent canceled my servermatrix account, so if you guys all say it's good, i'll stay. i'm just not sure where to go from here. there was that setup screen when i first logged in, and i really didn't know what to put for some things (it wanted DNS/resolvers in like 3 places and i wasn't sure if they were all the same or what...) and so now i'm not sure if it's all set up right... is there a way i can go back through that same setup? or what? i tlaked to someone on tech support, and they were a bit strange... i told them if i should put the servermatrix resolvers in the screen and the guy was like "no, that must be a typo, you need to use ThePlanet's IP's" and so now i don't know if my domains arent resolving becuse i need to contact SM and tell them im putting a domain here, becuase i set it up wrong, or because i'm using incorrect IP's, and i'm not sure how to find out.

I recommend SM because they have servers in TP which is a very good DC & gives at good prices.
If it was WHM, then http://the ip/whm to go there . The IPs you have to use (for DNS) are any 2 of the 5/10IPs SM gave you.
If you need help, contact me.

Just ask SM for the resolver IP's, they should tell you straight off :)
