Ok, I have a copy of Win2k available to me here (Available: as in its sitting on a shelf in the store; of course) and lately... my computer has been crashing every god damned few minutes... it's really screwed.
So; apprently... Win2k is much much stabler.... right...?
So, my best bet is to get rid of ME and put Win2k on; right?
Sooooooooooooo... I know Win2k is NT and not 9.x.... but, is there like; anything I should know first...

I think you'll need to get the specific win2k drivers for your hardware if you haven't already, as WinMe drivers usually don't work for both win2k and winMe - (then again, I have a 3com NIC that is running on a win98 driver just fine and I have winMe)

And if you play games, make sure that you are ready for a degration of performance in games. Some games may not work at all!
Yeah, Win2k's bad for PC gamers.... I suppose you can try becoming a PS or Nintendo freak to balance things out..

Get rid of ME. I was in the same situation as you, bought a notebook with ME pre-installed kept crashing so I installed Win2000 instead. Have been using Win2000 for about one year now and it has not crashed once yet.
Most of the new PC games can run on Win2000 but I cannot comment on the performance as I an using a notebook.

my 2000 notebook, 850 mhz, 30gb hd, dvd, 128meg ram, nic card, etc... runs reallly well, doesn't run some games, but then again it runs pretty stable with me, just run defrag once a week, thats what i do.

I never defrag (too lazy) and it runs perfectly for me too!

It sounds so strange for me. I have ME and FreeBSDv4.3 on a hard drive. Both work stable enough, especially the second :)
Probably you often open mail of the type "I love you" or "A naked wife" :o

Sweet, so Win2k it is!
Does most hardware have drivers for Win2k? So i'll need to make sure i've got all the drivers first; or i'll be screwed?
Will I need to format my 'puter before I put it on?
I'm not the biggest gamer these days; but most games will work with Win2k, right? The last game I bought (last week actually) is a couple of years old... most new games really suck :) And theres not a chance in hell i'll play games on a Playstation or Nintendo... horrible things :)
PC Games all the way :)
I wouldn't mind a naked wife....
I sohuld probably put a virus scanner onhere one of these days eh...

Usually, software that works with 95/98/ME should work with NT/2000... I've never run across any that hasn't, although I don't buy a whole lot of games...

don't need to format, you can just upgrade, or set up a dual boot if you have an extra partition... although I prefer doing a format to start out on a fresh hard drive...
newer games should run almost as fast as under 98/ME, but it really depends on your video card and drivers especially for 3D games... older games may not run at all, or will run slowly.. MS has a compatibility update so that you can run older games under win2k, but I don't know how effective it is cuz I don't play old games.

I meant viruses, of course. The problems can also be in hardware. I had such one: I use Celeron on Slot-1 motherboard with an adapter. The dust on the adapter (from fan) crashed any OS. After cleaning and wrapping the adapter all that was ended. If you wish to clean comp, don't forget disconnect it from AC - hardware components are very vulnerable (even if comp is turn off, but connected to) They also can be damaged by electrostatic. So one should first of all touch metal parts of case to discharge oneself before any repair. To check hardware you can use CheckIt soft. Memory and processor (temperature as well) especially.
The old drivers/programs (video driver for example) can be the reason.
