as in terms of influence, thru technical innovation, design, storyline, an concept.

Oh, man VLC I missed your posts like this. I'm going to have to go with the original Doom, and then Unreal because its engine pretty much revolutionized the gaming industry.

Has to be Doom it brought the world into first person mode as far as games go.

PS that sig is a fair bit offensive, I'd change that as none of it is funny.

PPS whatever happened to 'Men Without Hats' Hobo?

Bleh, they were a won hit wonder as far as I know. It might have been a good thing though, the Safety Dance music video is...well interesting to say the least.

where's Halo ?

Decker
August 25th, 2004, 10:41
Halo was still a follow on to the FPS stuff

Hobo

Man, oh man I would hardly call Halo revolutionary. It just happened that it was the platform leader for x-box. In fact, I have an x-box and that is pretty much the only good game I can name for the system, but revolutionary no way.

Significant games would need to really provide something to the gaming industry in my opinion. Like I wouldn't list Mario because the only reason so many people know about it is because it was a headliner for nintendo. I would on the other hand say that the Nintendo system itself was revolutionary.

Also I'm going to throw in Counter-Strike as it pretty much defined online game playing for FPS's.

How could you miss something like StarCraft or WarCraft II, which are arguably among the most popular games of all time that gave new life to the RTS genre? I never even heard of some of the games you've posted.

Hobo
August 25th, 2004, 13:28
Oh Starcraft is big, especially in the international scene and the original warcraft defines the genre. In fact Blizzard is a pretty big developer as the Diablo series is also a big name in gaming, with thousands of people still playing.

I'd say Commander keen/dangerous dave for its sidescrolling action that revolutionized gaming.

and then Wolfenstein 3D for its 3d, 1st person action.

but if i have to choose from the list, I'd choose Doom

stu

Star Control II - best in all categories

How about Spacewar? You know...the very first interactive video game? Yeah...that one. I think it was a little innovative/revolutionary.

Doom!

I can remember playing it on the Sega Genesis 32X many years ago.

Where's Wolfenstein 3D?

Fuzzylogic
August 25th, 2004, 21:18
i was just about to ask exactly the same question, with out wolf 3d then doom wouldn't have been as sucessful. i'm also wondering why half-life hasn't been included in this as well.

GregT

Mod: Add Wolf 3D please :biggrin2:

tandoc

There's not exactly a whole lot of variety in the options. Of those given, I'd have to go for Simcity, which showed us that games didn't have to be about running around and fighting bad guys!

Decker

I suppose you could count 'Thief' first one I remember where you didn't run in guns blazing, but crept around instead.

tandoc
August 26th, 2004, 06:46
there aren't any guns in street fighter.

trenzterra

Sim City for me, I love sim games (until I get bored of it ;))

Heh, it was also the first game where you had more fun working then you did playing :devious2: .

Oh man I just remembered Sam and Max and Day of the Tentacle.

Also X-wing

Decker
August 26th, 2004, 15:53
Oh - Day of the Tenticle, still got that in the 'easily reachable pile' :D

(And Half-Life...It needs to go on there, too.)

Matt8

Half-Life (revol. add-on mods w/C-S), The Sims (practically redefined add-on things user made), and Doom for obvious reasons.

Wasn't Civilization an innovator as well? Well I thought so. That was a great game. But so was Tomb Raider.

Oh wait, no it wasn't.

Also, anyone ever play "The Last Express" ?
An *amazing* game in my opinion, despite the fact it was a "point and click adventure".

Yes, The Last Express is a great game. Yet what do you mean by 'despite the fact'. Does being a 'point and click adventure' render a game as unworthy by default of genre?

I find such games to be all too slow and repetitive, while Last Express was an exception.
I really worded my first post poorly.

You're not going to tell me any other style of game isn't repetitive are you? The most common games these days [FPS, RTS, etc] are definately a lot more repetitive.

The original dune was the beginning of RTS, not C&C . And you left you Civilization .

Decker
August 31st, 2004, 11:36
Dune was an additional game with the way it towards that type, can't remember which one was before it - oop yes I can Cannon Fodder.

Sorry but with a good bit of scheming :) I did miss that :)

Where is quake? That was the first true 3d game, by far the largest achievement in Video gaming.

C&C, i know about it before I had a computer.

upon looking upon the voting list, i can't believe yet again no one has gone for elite, it was the firstly 3-d space sim around. i mean the game was huge for the game for its era, you could basically level to thousand of planets trading in real time and 3d space. i'd forgot about it until i saw it on the vote list.

i heard that was in dispute with some other game...

but doom is by far more revolutionary.. its the fact that they made it 3d without going 3d is what makes it better

Archbob

I voted for C&C mainly cause I'm a big fan of RTS, but I think Civilization was just as big and important.
