I use Norton Corporate Edition.....I think it's 2001......snagged a copy from my dad's office and burned it, so it was free for me.

Since most modern virus really dont do any harm to the computer, but simply spread themselves to see which virus writer can infect the most computers with his program..... how well do you know your anti-virus program is working?
After all, if a virus is fairly harmless, and your antivirus doesnt detect it, how would you know your not infected? These days, spyware is far more harmful than what virus writers are putting out there. While on the subject of spyware... I have all the best free and pay spyware removers on a cd that I update weekly. There is a new variant of CoolWebSearch that none of them can yet remove. It took me three days to find a way to remove it. Notepad is one of the programs that if the exe is deleted, windows will restore it within seconds from two backup locations. CWS had taken over notepad.exe in all locations, which meant anti-spyware either didnt know to look at that, or cant remove it.. So I replaced notepad from another computer into all three locations, then removed the CWS from all other locations. The notepad.exe was being used to restore any deletions of CWS strings.

What a clever way to spread that Junk. One of my computers was having mass problems with CWS, so much that I could not complete a search on google, yahoo or search.com without being redirected to CoolWebSearch.cc or something.
Ironically, Paid software like AdAware Pro and stuff did jack squat. I did some deep searching on my other clean comp and found some freeware script at a crack/keygen site which completely removed every trace of CWS Hijacker!!!!(Imagine that) And this CWS was a biatch it somehow regenerated itself (although I'm notsure if it did it the notepad.exe way) no matter how many times u deleted it from registry or disk. Just goes to show that sometimes the best things truly are free!!
BTW I use symantec corporate v8.something. Found it lying around work.

that has got to be one of the stupidest things i've ever read.
i have yet to be infected by a virus - and I haven't ever run an anti-virus - except a few times, and i uninstalled them because they were a waste of resources.
people these days just have no common sense and download/open anything they can find.

I juse AVG Anti-Virus, but its really just there for show. I dont keep it running most of the time, and I am happy to say I stay virus free, because I am not stupid in opening email attachments or downloading random things. I dont use holey products and I run Spyboy, Ad-Aware, and Spyblaster every week. Keeps this box running smooth.

because I'm smarter than the average bear.
get some common sense - you know virus is on your computer when its not operating correctly (which applies to programs crashing, internet going slow, etc)
Obviously you're an average bear

September 19th, 2004, 06:07
err
you can still get virus's even if you don't run anti virus, your never 100% protected.. n00b :)

You're also an average bear. You can still get a virus EVEN WITH AN ANTIVIRUS.
That's what I don't appreciate about antivrus; It establishes a false sense of security for a user, and if something goes wrong with their computer they automatically dismiss the possibility of a virus, because they have an antivirus - when antiviruses take a day at least to keep up to date with released viruses. It's like saying you will never get infected by a disease you have taken an immunisation for - which is a load of bull - a perfect example would be the influenza virus; Why? It has a multitude of known and unknown variants - it is ever changing, much like the viruses spread throughout the internet. You may be protected against several of the strains of the virus, but never all.
So you may argue, 'it's better to have some protection, than none at all'. Well, you're right - generally. However, in my case, you're dead wrong. Why? You're dead wrong because I, unlike many other people, was born with a gift, the gift of an IQ over 100. This IQ allows me to differentiate between opening files that aren't from somewhere I know or trust and stuff that I do. Not only that, but my system does not use the vulnerable 'explorer.exe' as a shell nor file explorer - eliminating the majority of threats. I don't even use Internet Explorer - another 50% of threats removed. I use Outlook, but I'm not stupid, I don't open emails from places I don't know or trust, and I only open attachments that I'm expecting. Having a firewall isn't an issue either - my computer is more or less protected at the router level. The only people that would want to get through to my computer would be able to - with or without a software firewall. So.. what vulnerabilities are left? Perhaps a few holes in Windows in general - all of which are safe due to my IQ of 100<.
Long story, short: use the software virus creators don't target along with some common sense and you should be fairly safe.
Good work on telling me something I already know - n00b.

Nope.
That's what a properly configured firewall is for. I'm behind a router AND I run a firewall on my box. I update daily and also run chkrootkit daily on all my boxes.
I'm invincible against outside attacks. :-)

i don't believe that - that youre invincible - certainly well protected tho.
I'd say 99% protected.

yeah i wouldn't be to cocky about being behind a good firewall and saying that your invicable. anti-virus are great to know you've got something to get a virus out of your computer, specially if your on dail up and can't get to those free webbased virus scanners.
its more the problem nower days virus can used your computer to become a 'zombie' server for anything from spam redirctor to the use of a server in a DOS attack. thats more of a problem nower days than it was ever in the present.

i'd hate to think of all the crap i pick up after an internet session, i'd hate to think about all the virues and spyware that i've picked up and not had something to remove it. AVG free edition has been great at alerting me of viruses and has done a great job removing it. GreyT, want sort of software do you use in your firewall, something like smoothwall? or some other linux based firewall?

In case it wasn't evident, GregT is running linux - the only real way to get a virus on there is to emulate it in Wine :d
any decent firewall - hardware or software - should at least inform you of any abnormal in/outgoing connections, letting you stop your computer from being used as a DoS attack participant (unknowingly, of course)

Seeing how we already brought this discussion up I'm using F-Prot AV on my Windows machine.
Nothing on my Linux machine.
