View Full Version : Moving my site

My site is currently hosted by FortuneCity. I like to use the File Manager to upload, edit, rename, and delete my files. It seems like they no longer have a File Manager so I need to move to a host that has one. I am looking for a host with the following:

-5 to 10 MB of space
-no ads AT ALL (no banners, no pop-ups, etc)
-fast
-browser uploads
-supports editing the HTML source of your pages right in your browser.
-supports uploading HTM, HTML, JPG, and GIF files
-supports the bcentral FastCounter (no CGI needed)

Not just the FreeWebSpace.net directory, but also the ClickHereFree directory has a lot of hosts that might be good for me. Out of all those hosts, I just don't know which one would be the best. Can somebody please help me?

BTW, does this new host have any disadvantages? There's no ads and you can upload ANY type of file, even ZIP files.

P.S. I guess I'll have to learn a bit of FTP? I'd want to create a link on the index page of my FortuneCity site to my new site wherever it ends up. It seems like FortuneCity no longer lets you use the Netscape FTP right in your browser,so I'd have to use an FTP program. Which FTP program is the best and the easiest? BTW, is there a way to rename and delete my files using FTP?

If the reason you want browser upload is that you are afraid of FTP, procrastinate no longer! ;)
If there is one application that's easy to learn it's ftp. Like sending an email or using your browser. Nothing to it. And yes, you can rename and delete.

WS_FTP LE is a popular free program. http://www.ipswitch.com/cgi/download_eval.pl?product=main
I like Leech FTP. http://stud.fh-heilbronn.de/~jdebis/leechftp/
Go to any freeware site and look around and grab what looks nice to you.

http://www.ireg.com/ seems like a paid host to me. And expensive too.

www.internettrash.com has no ads if you choose the no FTP account.

I think InternetTrash gives you the features I want in the list I made only if you sign up for their ads account? I'm also looking for a place that's a bit faster.

No ads at all is very difficult but if you want a fast host with browser-uploading features, try Geocities. I know, they have ads, but you can choose between different ad-options.

I think there's quite a few hosts that have most of the features I listed, I just don't know which one's the best:

http://www.freehost.nu/
http://www.communityzero.com/
http://www.infhost.com
http://www.free.mastersites.com/
http://www.viaduk.net/

Are there any disadvantages of the hosts above? BTW, I'm only looking for about 5 to 10 MB of space for HTML, GIF, and JPG files. Also like I said, I don't need CGI or FTP. If any CGI (I may not even need it for this), maybe just enough to support the bcentral FastCounter.

Or other than the five hosts I listed above in my last reply to this message, does F2S (Freedom to Surf) have any disadvantages? I know they only support FTP while I prefer browser uploads, but I now have an FTP program (WS_FTP) and it's working quite good for me as I start to close my FortuneCity site. Also, F2S may not quite be fast either. It's just that a lot of people I know have their site hosted at F2S. Also, they give a good 20 MB of space. Again, are there any disadvantages in F2S?

F2S is VERY slow... unless, they happened to upgrade their server recently.

Then what about the five hosts above? They all offer 5 MB.

You can't use CommunityZero for a public common stereotype website you'll probably be creating. It hard to explain, just visit the site.

use liquid2k then. 20 MB, one little button ad.

Martian--Geocities doesn't allow you to choose what type of ad you want anymore :( They are only using ad squares now......(Although on my one site I still have my user-placed banners on there....I wonder how long that will last)

Okay then, I guess it's either F2S or one of these four:

http://www.freehost.nu/
http://www.infhost.com
http://www.free.mastersites.com/
http://www.viaduk.net/

It might even be a good idea to post a poll.

take f2s out of your list. They are very good but they do not accept new sign ups right now.

Also I would sugest to find a host that offers both browser and FTP uploads. When you learn how to use FTP you will not want to go back to browser uploads.

Well then, which one of these four hosts is the best:

http://www.freehost.nu/
http://www.infhost.com
http://www.free.mastersites.com/
http://www.viaduk.net/

I think MasterSites free account went down from 5 MB to 1 MB. Like I said, I'm looking for atleast 5 to 10 MB. So I guess it's either one of these three or F2S said they'll accept new members again in a few days:

http://www.freehost.nu/
http://www.infhost.com
http://www.viaduk.net/

F2S is now accepting new member sign-ups again. I think I'm best off going with them. Lots of my friends use and have used F2S, it may be a bit slow but I think it might be fast enough for my site. The only thing is I'm not allowed to upload ZIP files to F2S. However, I should be allowed to link to them from an external location? Am I right, am I allowed to link to ZIP files on an external locatoin (IE. a file storage place) from F2S?

BTW, I read F2S's terms and guidlines. Do I have to sign up with this site rating system if I'm a member of F2S? Do I have to fill in all the sign-up fields such as phone-number? I don't want to give out my phone-number.

Other than the above, I think F2S might be a good choice. I get no ads and I even get a sub-domain.

Yes you can link outside your site. The problem is rater that most hosts don't allow hotlinking. But you can always make a download page at the other host and link to that.

I don't know if anyone actually submit their site for the ranking thing. I sure never did and never would.

Neil McRae

Wow, you mean I CAN link to ZIP files stored on an outside location from F2S?

meow

Yes of course. They disallow zip, exe and so on their own server because they want to avoid warez sites and also keep the bandwidth down I can imagine. Hosts never mind if you leech bandwidth from another server than their own. There may be some rule about linking to porn/illegal stuff, I don't remember, but that would be the only thing.

Your problem is that most hosts don't allow hot linking, that is linking directly to images, zips and so on from another host. To satisfy them you may have to make a download page on the other site and link to that page from f2s. In that way the actual downloads will be from the other host's site and not from an outside host (f2s).
