so how much did you earn each month from using these ad sponsors?
i heard they can't really make much and it's kind of a waste of time because many people won't click on the ads.

Its not a waste of time if you get lots of page views and traffic, Its harder now for people as most ad networks are not accepting, so its harder as your only options are usually affilate programs .

you get someone to click you banner usually then goto a site then they usally have to sign up for things or make a sale, you can get one's that pay for every click on the banner, but they are hard to find.
cpa = cost per action (signing up or downlaoding somthing)
cps = cost per sale
cpc = cost per click
cpm = cost per thousand impressons.
I am not saying you will only have to use afilate programs but ad networks don't seem to accept mnay sites these days but you could be an exption.
also pay per sale may work good for you, if your site is targeted.
It is really hard to make money these days and no matetr what any one says these days it requires lots of experiences and always being around when new opertunities present themselves.

it's really getting harder.
when i started with ads two years ago I earned around 100$ for 30000 page views.
Also getting a contract was very easy.
Now the rates are down, hardly any site is accepted and I earn only 100$ with more than 250 000 impressions per month.
But I hope the situation will get better in the future.

What network are you on? And if its CPM you should try CPC for a while.
