I started learning HTML when I was (counts on fingers) 10 or so. It was over two years later before I actually went online... and soon realised my 30kb graphics (on my webpages) were not that popular for 28k modems! :)

would it not be more sensible to ask how long ago did you start learning ... as most people on this board can answer under 15 even if they do not intend to start learning for another 5 years or so? ;)
your not a statistition?

I'm 13 now and allready buzzy for about 1 year. around 6 months online. On those 6 months I learned PHP, MySQL, Javascript,PSP7 (used 5 before) and a little Perl!
niv
June 15th, 2001, 19:54
nice :)

June 16th, 2001, 00:12
I didn't know you had to be online in order to learn PSP...
Wow, you learned PHP and MySQL and Perl in 6 months? Did you spend 10 hours a day learning or what? I only know some pretty basic self-taught PHP and a bit more self-taught Perl. Javascript's easy to understand how it works, so I know a bit of that too. I haven't touched MySQL yet, cuz I haven't found the need to use it so far.

You need to be online to make it work for more than 30 days...

you don't have to be online to learn PHP, Perl, or MySQL...it's just that hardly anyone does it this way.

Well, I forgot CSS. And no, I didn't spend 10 hours a day. (Exept in weekends)

needcgispace: Does this mean you need to host a MySQL database on your computer? Well you can, but it's beyond impractical.
lucifer
June 17th, 2001, 06:22
beyond impractical????
Any serious developer - or even hobbiest want's to have the stuff they use on there local machine. MySQL is simple to install at home. That way you can test things without messing your site(s) up.

and all you need to run it on Win 32 machines is a Win 32 copy of MySQL, a client, and MyODBC.
lucifer
June 18th, 2001, 07:28
Do you need the MyODBC? I have it but I thought it'd work ok without just I'd not be able to access it through ODBC which you don't need with php
niv
June 18th, 2001, 07:31
well, if you have a user-modified version of phpMyAdmin, i guess you won't need it. MyODBC is only for the clients that communicate with MySQL standalone.
lucifer
June 18th, 2001, 08:05
They have no excuses they should all install MySQL :D

I started programming HTML when I got my p266... about 2 years ago I think, I was 13 then... if I look back at some pages I've created back then I'm happy I've made some progress in HTML :o... it looks like sh*t... not that I'm a god programmer now, but it looks reasonable now :p
