Desperate for help

OK so this is my first time putting up a site and everything was ok because I had a co-webmaster.But she due to personal reasons can't help out right now.
And I think I've pretty much got everything covered except for a couple questions.Due to my slight blonde dumbness I couldn't figure it out.
First question how do you create a homepage?
And next even thought I uploaded everything into the public_html folder using ftp I still get a index page when I go to the site.
I would really appericate any help you guys could give me.

You can create a homepage by coding with HTML, or using a website creating program, like Microsoft Frontpage, or Macromedia Dreamweaver.
Second, What files did you upload? do you have a file called index.htm or index.htm or index. anything?
