First of all, this isn't about what is and isn't legal thread so don't even bother posting anything if that's all you're going to say.
I was just wondering if anyone else is really meticulous when it comes to organizing their mp3 collections? It drives me crazy when I get a files that are labled in some stupid format like "01-artist_name-track_title-ripper_tag.mp3". Anyone else have the urge to rename everything in a uniform manner like "Artist Name - 01 - Track Title.mp3"? I don't know why it bothers me, but it just gets on my nerves. Over Christmas I will be organizing my 10,000+ song mp3 collection and I'm not looking forward to it :(.

I too have to have everything organized properly when it comes to my music collection.
I go so far as to put my albums in subgenre's even.
ie: /users/james/music/drum and bass/clownstep/aphrodite/urbanthology
And my iTunes playlist is organized pretty much the same way.
It takes time, but it's well worth it.

Do you own .mp3 files ? How about .ogg, .mpc .ape .flac .aac .apl .wv mp4 ofr or spx files ? Do you have a lot of them ?
If yes, then you probably already know that it is easier to create a chaotic budge of files with strange names and in wrong locations than to have a clean and nice collection where every file is where it is supposed to be, with a perfect name and Tag information.
Sounds like the truth... don't worry The GodFather is here to put order to chaos and put you in control. No more strange file names and endless search for "that song"!.Rename, update Tags, restructure files on hard disk, create/merge play lists,encode-decode with LAME/Ogg Vorbis/MpcEnc, export/import to/from file, play, use freedb.org & allmusic.com, catalog them in a library... with ease of use and perfect results every time.
I have all my iRiver MP3's as:
Music/A(-Z)/Artist/Album/[TRACKNUMBER]_Artist-Song.mp3
Its as easy as copying them to \Music and then just running the Godfather. It will do the rest

The only MP3's I have are ripped from CD, so it's pretty easy to name them when I ripe them.
So all my tracks are named as: [Band/Artist] XX Song Name (Where XX is the track number).
It seems to work well. :P
Since I don't download much, I don't have that problem so much, but on the rare occasions I do the first thing I do is rename it correctly, and then ship it off to the correct folder.

You dream about threads?? :confused4 What other computer-related stuff do you dream about?
Actually as long as the song name is in the filename, i usually dont rename them.
you guys are just overly organized.

I dream about a lot of things, last night, I confused Half-Life 2 and going to school (you know, the whole train thing and what not)
and yeah, i didn't read the thread properly, i organise my music similarly to you guys...
'Genre'/Artist/Album/CD#(if applicable)/Track
but i name them 'Track # - Title' eg. "01 - Porn Music.mp3"
although my genre's aren't really genres....
I have...
Anime Music
Game Music
Japanese Music (that isn't from anime or games)
MetalRap (not really, just any artist that I followed up from NFSU ends up in there)
Movie Music
PopRock (music that is in english, generally)
Techno (i don't know what techno is, but this stuff never really fit into anything else)
Random
WEIRD AL!!!!!
It's worth the time spent sorting your music, because you only do it once and then you know where everything is in your playlist and hard drive.

yes! In fact, the other day, I spent a good 2 hours making sure my files were named in the artist - song title.mp3 format...and I had to make sure my playlist was perfectly alphabetized. That included doing through every file and deciding which band needed the word "the" in front of it, and which didn't, then alphabetizing accordingly. :confused4

I have genres/artist/songs
I have Rock, Heavy, Electronic, Comedy, Rap, Other
I don't really care about file names, just their id3 tags

artist/cd name/track num - title
It works out quite well. All my music is stuff I've personally ripped, so it's a nice format.
