Most sites are designed for 800 x 600 resolutions. My computer looks best with a 1024 x 768 resoltuion. However, when I visit websites its VERY VERY annoying how small the site is relative to the internet explorer window width. When I set it to 800 x 600, the site takes up the full window and looks much better, but my desktop and other programs look big and clunky on my monitor.

Is there a way to get "the best of both worlds" and somehow enlarge websites to display in 800 x 600 resolutions while surfing the net so that most sites will fill the entire internet explorer window like they should, but while keeping 1024 x 768 for my desktop and other programs?

I remember once seeing a little icon in the System Tray that would let you switch quickly from one resolution to another. I found these directions for Win98,

but I can't make it work in my office's Win2K -- there's no option for an icon in the Display Properties -- although I'm not ruling out that it's something that's been disabled by the IT people. They hate it when I tweak things.

It's not just a rediculous complaint. Sometimes there are things I like viewing full screen while visiting websites and it doesnt work out if they have a set width. There might be a cool flash animation but it gets squished smaller by a large resolution. I just wanna view websites the way the designers intended it to look without the gaps of space.

I know I could keep changing my resolution every time I open internet explorer but that would get annoying after a while.
