Is there an audio program out there that can either:

Remove vocals from a beat to produce just the beat without vocals

or..

Remove a beat from a song so you only have the vocals (acapella)

I have heard acapella versions of songs where I can barely hear the beat in the background so I assumed there might be a program which can just remove the beat. This should be fairly easy to do, as Pristine Sounds 2000 can remove record scratches from a song.

This ain't informative, but I know that a DJ can get rid of the lyrics of a VCD....

If you have a midi file Format 1, then it is easy.
Not midi file can be transformed by frequency selection. Not sure, but SoundForge can do that. As I know, it is the best prog to make transformations of sound signals (not midi). But since there are common frequencies in vocals/beat/... result will be disappointing. The best way - to ask musicians to play the same as you like :)

hehe.. i don't think i'll be receiving custom acapellas from multi-platinum artists any time soon

thanks for the info, I will look for soundforge and see what it can do for me.

I've installed SoundForge (an old version) and tried the selection.
Process/EQ/
I liked that it has a button "preview" and one can listen the changes of sound in the real time depending on a pattern of settings.
There are music news groups (alt.music....) more knowing on the matter. A time ago I used SF for phoneme synthesis
