Yeah, an early Merry Christmas to the FWSers. May your Christmas be festive and your New Years fall down drunk.
By the way, I don't consider Christmas a religious holiday at all. I've never thought about it as the birth of Christ, just more of a goodwill holiday. What else do you have to say about us atheists, andy? :p

Not much, I'm Cathlolic myself but I'm not really the church-going type, the only 2 times I was at church this year would be when my brother was christened, and tomorrow, after all the pressies :)

I always thought it was Jan 1st.... :o (Because B.C. = Before Christ)
I don't celebrate Christmas. Not because I'm not religious, but simply because I don't know what they're celebrating.

The actual thing happened around September 4-7AD (Anno Domini/Latin:the year of the Lord).
BTW B.C= "Before the common era."

Easter is to commemorate the death of Christ. The records are so ancient and muddled that no one could ever accurately predict when he was born. The 25th is essentially an arbitrary date we've picked.

Blank: "Christmas is a time when people of all religions come together to worship Jesus Christ." - Bart Simpson
there is also..
"Aren't we forgeting the true meaning of Christmas? You know, the birth of Santa." but that makes less sense...

No it doesn't, that's B.C.E. and it was just invented recently as an odd and really quite pointless attempt to replace "Before Christ." I say quite pointless, because "common era" is utterly meaningless and it still begins at the date which is meant to be the birth of Christ (even if that date happens to be off by 4 years or so).
Well, I'm off to celebrate atheist Christmas (though with Catholic grandparents) in another hour or so. Merry Christmas eve/day to everyone depending on time zone.

Easter commemorates the Resurrection.

Before the common era was a term developed to replace the term Before Christ because some people didn't want to use the term "Christ" when describing B.C. I still say B.C. and not B.C.E.

By the way, Christmas has not always been celebrated on December 25th. The early church decided to move the celebration to December 25th to coincide with the cheifly British and Scottish (and possibly other European) "pagan" celebrations of the winter solstice. Like many Christian holidays, moving the day of Christmas to the day of a "pagan" holiday was meant to make the transition to Christianity easier for those used to their old holidays.
