I believe this was already suggested...

Any thread who asks or refers to unlimited space, bandwidth, dbs or anything anything along those lines should be closed immediately by mods...

Any web host that uses this forum and mentions unlimited something should be banned...Or suspended until they change their marketing strategy...

People like myself - who isn't as experienced as a lot of you here expect unbiased, honest and reliable advice for web hosting issues.

When idiots claim that they offer unlimited this and that, unsuspecting individuals to the web hosting game would fall for that trap.. -- A La TacidHost.

They can run their business as they wish, but they shouldn't have the right to use this forum...

Any thoughts?

I don't think they should be locked. They should be allowed to be bashed if the host has any sense and see's there company being bashed for a reason like unlimited bandwidth they may think twice about advertising it because when one newbie see's a post bashing a company they forget that host and move to the next one they short listed.

They will have this thing stuck in there heads unlimited hosts BAD . Or at least thats how i hope it works and it should work that way.

Unlimited hosts should be bashed whenever someone mentions them. The Simplenet or something like was a big ripoff for many people... as I remember. Promise people Unlimited Everything then merge with Yahoo.

Does this go for 99.9% Uptime as well?

How can a host predict when a backbone will go down?

99.9% of what, per day, per week, per month?

Per year?

99.9 percent by the day compared to a year is a different story.

I don't think any web host should go down, but sometimes the
net has its own problems. I had a AOL customer complaining that they could not access their site, come to find out it was AOL that was having the problem.

I've sort of wondered about that myself...
I've hosted with a number of different companies, some better than others, some pretty bad, but they have all had down time.. OK, no problem, it happens.
But when the downtimes exceed the 99% limit (who is to know? unless you ping your server 24/7/365 to see if it's responding) what is the guarantee? Free hosting for that month? A refund? Prorated rates? I've seen the guarantee on nearly every hosting service, but I've never seen exactly what the compensation is.

btw... The "it's your ISP that's down" response is standard issue for tech support at web hosts... I always send them a traceroute report when they do that to show them exactly which of there routers has died. It speeds things up tremendously.

Can anyone name a really successful host that offers unlimited space and overall good service and support?

I understand it is a marketing tactic, but is there at least one host like this that stands above the crowd?

Your right it is a marketing probe.
Umm... http://www.burlee.com seems to have been around for quite a while. Almost choose their Unlimited Plan until I realized that there is no such thing as an unlimited sized hard drive.

Many I remember have disappeared, actually most have.

Unlimited bandwidth, aghh, especially the newbies fall for this marketing scheme, its sad to see so many people request it as well.

don't you understand what they mean by unlimited? It means that your site could take up 10mb or 150mb, they just don't want to spend the time to figure out what is resonable pricing for the plans. there are no unlimited size hd's, and if there were, i'd be the first to fill it up, with mp3s :p

If they don't take the time to figure out how much to charge or even to restrict the size of accounts, do you think they take the time to check to see if their server is full or overloaded?

I thought a host could not post about their own services here?

Also a host on a cable modem? I would stay away from that.

I thought he was joking about being a host, but apparently he's not, so I had to edit it for two reasons... Aside from breaking the self-promotion rule, he's also no doubt violating terms of service by running a host on a cable modem...
