Now they are starting a premium edition and
A free version of TheCounter.com will still be available after July 11,2001,
but without the premium services such as the invisible counter, online
stats, customer support -- and the ability to group multiple TheCounter.com
accounts under one login!
That sucks!

So, where else has invisible counters? I've used http://dominoltd.com/counter , but it's not very reliable. (Lots of downtime.)

I didn't even find thecounter to be very reliable...took a while to finally start counting...

This is a very bad move by thecounter.com - removing both the online stats & invisibility - why on earth will anyone stay with them now?
I mean talk about business strategy....why not force us to receive more e-mails or make the invisible counter a subtle ad / link? Yeah, I know - that would hardly make any money - I'm just clutching at straws.
Their online stats are an excellent service, but they're only good if they're free. Everyone wants something for free.
I know it's a common topic but what's the best alternative, ie (in order of importance) free, invisible and online stats?

I had one of theirs and another one on my site for awhile, and I found that thecounter.com's miss quite a few hits.

Why is invisible so important?
I must admit, I was using their invisible counter till just yesterday, but I used it 'cos it was there, I would still have used their stats if they hadn't had one.
Now I have to pay, Iīve changed counters.

I agree, it's not so much that invisible is so important, I just don't like 'visitor #0000000020' displayed, or any number for that matter
or the ugly 'click here' arrows (I forget which counter that is)
lord_andy: which counter have you changed to?

To bad they won't be offring that for free anymore.
I changed to http://www.bakaranweb.de/logger it has invisible counter, stats, "don't count me" option, etc.
They use a PHP/MySQL script you can have for free, but I don't wanna waste space on my f2s account, so I'll use their site.

you could always use a cheap php counter. you can make one with or without an SQL database

Polestar:
Iīve recently changed to a stats counter in Spanish, it makes no difference to me if it's in english or spanish.
www.yaspe.com.
I'm just trying it out for now. I found it on a page and from 80 votes it had a 9.8 which seemed quite high. We will see. I'm not totally convinced yet.
All I need to show is a small pic with a Y in it. That way I don't have to show how few people visit my site. You can see it if you visit my Spanish joke page. It's in the bottom left hand corner.

I've always liked Extreme Tracker: http://www.extreme-dm.com/tracking/?reg
They don't let you make it invisible, but it doesn't display numbers, and it's not very noticeable, IMHO.

Will they still have the regular reports on stats though? I don't mind the not invisible part, since I didn't use that. On the website, it only says that the invisible counter, better customer support, and improved stats will be exclusive to premium members.

Quote from the e-mail I received:
A free version of TheCounter.com will still be available after July 11, 2001, but without premium services such as the invisible counter, online stats and customer support.
I suppose that they will still send you a weekly report which tells you how many visits you had per day, but thatīs all. No, referers, no screen sizes, no navigator info, no nothing.
