Hey,
I started http://www.90megs.com with a partner yesterday. We have around 7 servers secured for just this website to offer free and paid hosting. We have estimated and we can fit around 10,000 free accounts with our current plans, and around 5,000 - 7,000 medium sized accounts.

We are currently moving servers (should be done by tomorrow) so some accounts you make today may be lost. However, we don't expect to have any downtime and we own the domain and whatever.

Since we have only been around a couple days expect updates later. We would really appreciate any info / comments you have on our service. The servers are pretty fast and should accomodate you!

Sounds good, but I just signed up and can find no mention of the nameservers to use anywhere on the site. Most of the support links seem to point at http://www.30mb.com/index2.htm ???

Wish you signed up an hour ago lol, we are currently switching nameservers to a bigger dedicated server so the site will be down for around 10-24 hours. :cry2: .

what are the new name servers for the free hosting?

they are still propogating, might be why some subdomains dont work yet.

Within 10 hours most likely, really depends on how long it takes for it to propogate.

oh, btw, what are the rules, for the free hosting ? has to be a certain amount of visitors per day? per week? per month? any catches? :) no offense but there are lots of free webhosts out there which stopped offering the free hosting or imposed strict rules for it and stuffs like that. from what i seen, i think you guys gonna go on the right path. i wish you all goodluck with your site.

these are great plans, more than sufficient for a personal site, or even a small business

You don't have to sign up again, when the dns servers are up then all the subdomains / accounts will work (they shouldn't now).

There aren't any restrictions other than the plan limits we posted and general TOS rules

- no pornography sites
- no hate crime / discrimination sites
- no illegal downloads / warez

that kind of stuff.

We don't do unique visitor meters / per day bandwith meters / that kind of thing. It's just like paid hosting .. only free.

like I said there are no banners or pop ups on any pages ..
We might make it where only 404 error pages give a link back to our main site, but for now there are no ads on any part of our hosted sites.

we are planning a february 28th release as we are waiting for the domain to propogate, then we will be all good to go!

Can you at least tell us what address(es) the nameservers are going to be? because it also takes 24-48hrs for updates to our domain name's to propogate globally too.

Trial just means that we are testing out our services, we plan to make it free forever, it is not a trial for users, more like a trial for the administrators. Yes, its 90mb space and 9gb bandwith.

Doing a lot of site maintenance today while we wait for the domain to finish propogating. Seems like it's taking its sweet time, eh? :P.

hi. what happened to my accounts? i had two accounts and now they dissapeared. when i try to login it brings me back to the login page.

I'm just curious about if I can start from a subdomain and, later maybe I could use a domain name? Well, what is your response to that question Givemeplain? I haven't had a lot of luck with hosts lately. Shyper.com dumped all of their free accounts. 5gigs.com has shut down. Xplosive.com went belly up. Freeserver.com is gone. Galaxy.co.uk has shut down their free accounts. webspace.com advertised a non-existant mysql database. It's not like my website needed one at the time. My php code coughed up an odd error code with them despite the fact the code works fine for six months with other websites. Their free webspace ads still claims that they place no ads on your site while they put text link ads over their users' each and, every webpages.

We will never put ads on any webpages, and we plan on being around for a long while.

Regarding switching from a subdomain to domain, we would probably have a small fee (a couple dollars to do that) as we have to do it ourselves, it isn't automated. You can signup with an existing domain at no extra cost, just switching it would cost a little. Or, you can simply just make a new user account at the site for your domain name =).

I was trying to say in the first place that webspace.com's control panel allowed me to start with a subdomain first. Months later I added a domain name. Can C-panel do that? Sorry, about the earlier post. I've had a rough week. Some idiot stole my clothes from the condo laundry room apparently thinking a PVC coat was actually a leather coat. LOL. Hehe, sorry about that. It hasn't been down for long amounts of time =). I think that my partner decided we will begin to charge 1$ per year for the 'free' service now. We had almost 500 hack attempts on the server in the past 3 DAYS, as well as 500 invalid accounts, and at least 10 accounts spamming email messages through our hosting service. We are sorry to have to do this, but 1$ a year isn't really anything, considering paypal takes like 35 cents of it ;). We might change this rule if we can find a way to stop hackers, spammers, and invalid accounts from being created so often!

edit: We will taking away this rule in a couple days, once we have email verification up and extra security measures =).

Well, the free account's that werent hacked and all, your still going to host them?

No accounts were hacked, but there were hack attempts on the server which were not sucessful. We added the 1$ paypal verification so we know who is signing up for the accounts. This is to ensure a secure server for your sites. Even though the accounts are free, we give them the same support and attention as our paid account hosts. However, we are instituting a new and free verification system for signups. All free accounts will always be hosted, so don't worry.

Our true goal is for members that are using free accounts to upgrade to premium accounts if they have the money (it's not that expensive). However, we realize that not all people have access to online money. We will always have free and paid hosting options.

Those of us that already have accounts up do we have to pay this 1$

We are working on even more security measures .. as hackers keep trying to create massive ammounts of fake accounts / get access to server. We are upgrading all sorts of things to prevent this. Sorry for all the down time..

And how are we not reliable? We've only existed for the past 6 days and we said in the topic title this is a "trial" and we just want to see how things will be running. I admit we weren't prepared for over 600 hack attempts on the server, people abusing the free email service, and mass creation of fake accounts. However, we have adapated to the situation, added extra signup security measures, and have added extra security to the server itself.

If this host isn't good enough for you, then go find another one. K, Thnx.

As I posted in the support forums for the site signups are going to be down for a day or two. Sorry I don't check this post a lot :(. It's not 'tall' promises we have over 2500 people using our free hosting now .. if you can't wait a day or two for signups to be active find another host :).

Update:

New signup page 95% complete. It is a lot more complete and a lot easier to navigate. Should take a lot less time to create an account as well, there is also no email validation this time.

There is a fancier and new admin panel for all users once your account has been created, and easy management of multiple accounts under one username. All features should be working very very soon.

We are also proud to announce that 90megs.com hosting is no longer automated. This is for security reasons, but don't worry, we still accept all accounts that do not violate our terms of service. All accounts will be activated within 24 hours, usually less :).

There is no limit to what languages you can use, all languages are allowed.
The 10GB transfer is not limited per month, but if we see you jump from 1gb a month to 9gb in one day we will investigate it to see if something is screwy. (Like illegal mp3s for download on your site).

You say I won't be billed. However when registering I'm requested to provide with my credit card information. Why?

are you sure you put in your right info when you signed up? I know they are very strict about who they accept. I took me a couple tries until the account was accepted and created for me.

90Megs.com is back in the swing of things for accepting accounts, accepted / fixed over 400 accounts last night.

I thought it said that between the 2 or 3 owners, they had all together 30 years experience. If there are 3 of them that's just 10 years a piece. If one of them is older and has 20 years experience, then the younger ones might have 5 a piece, which is reasonable.

90megs.com has done fine by me, and I hope they are around for a few decades.

Yea the site is managed by more than one person ;). We also have some special technicians come in everyonce in a while and help out with stuff. You'd be hard pressed to find a host that gives the kind of bandwith / space that we do that has NOT gone down less than us :-).

did you get the email from them to login to the client backend? You can check your status of the account from there. If you didnt that means you didnt fill out something anf they removed/deleted your request. You might need to try again.

They also drastically changed the features available without any notice. No more POP accounts, only one MySQL DB, no more access logs or stats, no more cron jobs... There's a long list of missing features.

True, I always backup my info :) The account features have changed, but you still get 90mb and 10gb transfer mysql, ftp.

Hmm...I made my first 90megs site earlier today, largely because I'm sick of 150m.com, and thought about moving my site(s) from there to avoid the ads that completely destroy my website on slower computers, and I can't help but notice that lately, every major search engine is programmed to avoid 150m.com sites because they perceive a security threat in the fact that 404 errors go back to the main site, and I can't customize enough of my site to allow search engine spiders anyway.

But while this site seems great, I tried to use my first account to host .jpg webcam images that I frequently replaced (I was experimenting with anaglyphs, my targets could be seen in perspective with comic book red/cyan glasses).

Now, I don't know if I've been IP blocked for rapidly uploading files, if the server is just down, or if it's merely something on my computer, but I can't get into my website at all - nor can I access the main 90megs site, or the support page, or in fact, any site from 90megs.com. If anyone knows what's up and could help me here, I would greatly appreciate it, because I'd like to migrate my main website from 150m.com. I'm not interested in maintaining the webcam, if that caused the problem.

Like in my first post, I said that other people can apparently get in and see my last jpg from the webcam.

I, however, can't get in, even if just to remove it.

I have gotten this error with a few sites.

I just went into the host file on my computer and made sure some spyware was not changing this file.

You can go in there and delete what is in there and save it and see if the browser works then.

Also try a different version or browser all together. good luck

Hmm, I knew I didn't have any spyware, but I just tried it today, and it works again. I'll just confusedly accept it for the time being, I suppose (although your advice may have been correct, because I think I cleared my cache somewhere in between).

what do you mean that they dont have a mail server? how do they get email?

Obviously have a mail server if you have to respond to a validation email to finish creating your account.
