I received an email containing this:

(first they say that a lot of things will change at NBCI.com)

1. Make sure you have a backup of all data stored on www.nbci.com
(such as your web site and shared files), as well as on Xoom.com
and SNAP.com. Such a backup should be stored on your hard drive, on floppy disks or other web site hosting providers, but not on NBCi.

2. Begin evaluating alternative web site hosting providers. We recommend that you plan to have your site and shared files hosted by a different provider as soon as possible and before July 15th.
NBCi has made arrangements with Homestead.com for web page hosting and XDrive.com for file storage to help make the transition a smooth one.

Yes, that's true...
So the rumor has become truth... NBCI discontinues with offering free webhosting...

another one bites the dust.

what is so hard for ppl to place ads on their site that they keep asking for ad free and why cant ppl click on the ads to make things a bit more easier on the host providing the service

keith
June 22nd, 2001, 18:27
it's their own fault. their ads were outside the members' pages in a frame, not a single ad was embedded or popped up.. sooo easy to get around.

clearjade
June 22nd, 2001, 20:21
Sigh...and I was going to move my site to them too. Is there any other site that offers a lot of space, and also offers ftp and is reliable and fast too? I am not picky about ads anymore...I'm desperate here.

June 22nd, 2001, 20:26
multimania... its french but if you can get around the sign up ur in.. its kinda self explanatory tho you can kinda guess what info they are asking for

clearjade
June 22nd, 2001, 20:34
I think they only have popups...but if I completely run out of options I will go to them. I'm from Canada, and I take French, so I understand the page somewhat on my own. My site was about 180 MB last time I checked. Sigh. BTW these are mostly images and sound files, not warez or mp3's.

June 22nd, 2001, 20:59
check out http://xoom.it

they're not owned by nbci so they're not shutting down
unlimited space and fast ftp

clearjade
June 22nd, 2001, 21:06
Um I don't know Italian. 9_9 I'll try xoom.fr. Have any of u heard of www.IofM.net? I haven't, but it has unlimited space... and ftp.

Bruce
June 22nd, 2001, 21:21
well i don't know italian either but its easy enough to sign up for

and about www.IofM.net well unless you happen to live on the Isle of Man they would probably be a bad choice because you need to use them as your isp.

clearjade
June 22nd, 2001, 21:25
Oh ok lol...I didn't read that. I'll try xoom.fr. Do these xoom sites allow English sites?

Also, I went to look at the member sites, and their adframes look weird...there isn't even a xoom logo in them...just a gray bar. ???

Bruce
June 22nd, 2001, 21:28
Well I've never seen anything that says they don't allow english sites.

clearjade
June 22nd, 2001, 21:37
Ack, you only get 100mb of bandwidth! >_<

Bruce
June 22nd, 2001, 21:46
no, they have a 100 megabit connection which is split between all the sites

clearjade
June 22nd, 2001, 21:48
Ohhh ok. I think my problem may be solved then. Thanx! :)

June 22nd, 2001, 22:01
Man, I can't believe I have to do this: I'm now forced to use Nightsteel.com (at least until Crosswinds.net gets rid of its warez problem, and if they're still alive at the end; right now I'm very mad at both NBCi AND Crosswinds' warez users; even if Crosswinds never restores their FTP service again, I'll be very grateful if they turn off the stupid download limit so my site can function there). Nightsteel is getting faster somewhat, but they can never match good old NBCi's speed, oh man, why, WHY!!?

** Breaks down crying inside **

BTW, it's a shame that Nightsteel.com no longer allows new accounts for now. Man, am I glad I got in when I did, otherwise my site would be going to hell in a handbasket!

clearjade
June 22nd, 2001, 22:02
I tried to activate my account, and it sent me to an NBCI 404 page! So much for that...*groans*

clearjade
June 22nd, 2001, 22:32
Well I got it working on the Italian Xoom. I was looking at the IP addresses of NBCI and xoom.it ... and they're almost the same. ftp.nbci.com is 206.132.179.136 and ftp.xoom.it is 206.132.163.183 Are you sure xoom.it isn't going to close down??

Cracker
June 22nd, 2001, 22:57
I wouldn't trust xoom.fr or xoom.it myself.

clearjade
June 22nd, 2001, 23:01
Ugh, I'm really running out of options. Nightsteel, that host you were talking about Cracker, isn't doing signups right now. The hosting page gives a 404 error. How much space did it give anyway?

Cracker
June 22nd, 2001, 23:11
They give away 1 gb (1024 mb) of free webspace; now that's a more practical way of saying "UNLIMITED!" It's just too bad that they're not accepting new sign-ups.

clearjade
June 22nd, 2001, 23:15
Yea, that is too bad. :( I'm stuck and I dunno what to do. *slumps and trudges away* My page will be dust at this rate. I've probably lost all my visitors by now since it's been gone for a week.

Cracker
June 22nd, 2001, 23:24
Well, you can try Crosswinds.net if you're really desparate.

TJGuitar85
June 22nd, 2001, 23:31
but crosswinds is the worst FWP ever, they always say there getting a server upgrade, for the past 4 or 5 years. But its ALWAYS slow and I can never log in to the FTP, I wish fortunecity didn't mess up there linking, I cant even link to fiels on my fortunecity account from myfortunecity account without getting a stupid "Denial" page and I wish tripod didn't delete ever account with ".zip" 's 50megs seems to be okay, but I really wish there was something that gave some more space...like a gig. or at least 100 meg. I dont care about ads, if they need ads to support em then they need ads. Better to ahve ads then to be slow as hell like crosswinds was before it got ads. (and it still is super slow)

clearjade
June 22nd, 2001, 23:36
Are u crazy?! I had my page hosted there last year and it was horrible. Last week I tried FTP and it was soo slow! I can't stand browser uploads. I think there's http://www.esmartstart.com It seems to be the only place I could find which hasn't brought their limit to 10megs ala FortuneCity and many of those listed on this website! It says though, that u can only have one account. :/

Oh forgot to mention that Crosswinds only gives FTP access to paying members only now.

clearjade
June 22nd, 2001, 23:53
What about http://www.bigsitecity.com ? It gives 100mb, ftp access, banner ads, and a file size limit of 2mb.

Well it's not letting me sign up, so never mind. Does anyone have a nightsteel account they don't want?

TJGuitar85
June 23rd, 2001, 00:04
Id rather have 50 megs with a 5 MB limit then 100 megs with a 2MB limit. The 50Megs FTP was faster than the NBCi today. My page worked fine. http://scifimusic.50megs.com

Crosswinds is the last unlimited space FWP on the planet now, and that is just sad. :( I find Crosswinds to be super slow only when downloading files larger than 200 kb (sometimes they won't download all the way, resulting in corruption). Tony Holmes (the VP) told me that this was due to abuse by warez; he only set this limit for the free members, and he will remove the limit once he can nail the warez abusers effectively. Warez abusers are also the same reason that CW now only has FTP for paying members. Now, with NBCi gone, the situation will probably only get worse. Is Crosswinds going to die next because of these idiots? Only time will tell.

i too need a host for a lot of realaudio files, i'm trying nbci now but looks like it was a waste of time since they're going to close. also i noticed half the time i try to access my site i get a 404 error. i used esmartstart for a long time and everything was fine until i started to use too much bandwidth and was deleted. also their file size limit is 1.5 megs. i don't know where to turn, mostly likey i will never get the site back up in its entirety.

Och. My page loads soo slow! I think I might go on SpacePorts or something. I'll just click on the banner myself once everyday, or get my friends to...well they probably won't. It's the only thing I can think of. My xoom.it page doesn't even work, and it's quite slow at the moment.

Bruce
June 23rd, 2001, 07:03
well there is mifix.net

clearjade
June 23rd, 2001, 07:09
The host is on cable. I think that's not allowed on cable connections, if I'm not mistaken? I'm just afraid they'll be down and also *slow* a lot.

Bruce
June 23rd, 2001, 07:15
actually they're on sprint broadband dsl.

most of the unlimited hosts are slow if you have'nt all ready noticed.

also, nightsteel is on cable. they're not accepting new sign ups, but they haven't been shut down.

clearjade
June 23rd, 2001, 07:19
Oh all right then...I've got nothing to lose now anyhow. :(

clearjade
June 23rd, 2001, 07:39
I tried signing up for mifix.net...and my activation is taking awhile to be successful. :/

clearjade
June 23rd, 2001, 08:22
Yes! My brother has DSL and he said he'll set up a web server as soon as he can...with all the extra neat stuff like cgi and php and all that other good stuff. ^_^ Best yet he has about 20 gigs free so I can take up a lot of space! Oh I'm so happy! *sings*

June 23rd, 2001, 12:20
Thing is will your bro keep his comp on all day? If so can I get in on it? ;)

TJGuitar85
June 23rd, 2001, 12:26
Yea...Can I get in on it too?

I like your optimism. If the company - NBC Internet, Inc. has decided to fold the free web space business, what we should expect? All the FWPs of less magnitude must soon follow the example. Who is next?

clearjade
June 23rd, 2001, 13:26
I checked and it's not allowed on it. It's mpowered (from mtt)...sigh guess I'll have to use a bunch of separate accounts. It was nice hoping though. I don't want the company to get on my brother's back for me. Oh and he does keep his comp on all day...but that doesn't matter now lol.

June 23rd, 2001, 13:55
Well, there is allways www.russoweb.com with e-mail uploads.

ndjx
June 23rd, 2001, 14:56
Well it seems today xoom.it is very fast. I think it would be a wise idea to see if it stays open when nbci goes under. If xoom.it stays I think it's well worth using them as a host. Clearjade your site loaded instantaneously today.

TJGuitar85
June 23rd, 2001, 15:00
Yea my xoom.it loaded fast too. I just Hope xoom.it isnt super slow like xoom was before it turned into NBCi.

TJ

clearjade
June 23rd, 2001, 20:40
Well yesterday my nbci page was down too...so I thought maybe that had an effect on xoom.it ... :(

clearjade
June 23rd, 2001, 23:27
From the first paragraph of the "who we are" page at http://www.xoom.it/about/ (since I translated it using babelfish, the english is kinda messed up.)

Who we are

XOOM.it is the publishing and technological company, NBCi result partnership between Webnext S.P.CA. and XOOM.com, today quoted to the Nasdaq. E' the portale leader in Italy in the Communities Web, one platform of aggregation in virtual communities on-linens for Internet customers, thought and realized in order to facilitate the relationships on the network, comprising to its inside free services, e-commerce and direct marketing.

Homestead is going to change Personal to a Paid Service. If you sign up for Homestead you are likely to be either forced to pay a monthly fee or to be limited to 8 MB and ONLY 3 PAGES (Personal PREVIEW). This is not a joke.:( Hopefully they will change their minds but it looks pretty gloomy.

Isn't interesting that the big media companies (Disney, NBC) spend big bucks, take over viable internet companies, mess them up and all that is left when they are done is dust?

Well, the whole Internet advertising business was a big soap bubble and now it has popped. As Yahoo say, they are cutting the dry branches that don't bear fruit, as any company would. It's getting scary though. Free is out, that's for sure. :(
