Optional Registration

Hi,

When someone completes an optional registration for Windows XP VLK, which requires no activation, is there any other information (besides street address, name, phone, etc that the individual provides) that is transmitted with the registration to identify, say, what specific computer it came from?

Is the information submitted in an optional registration used purely for marketing purposes by microsoft?

I am writing a paper on software activation related issues and protocols and am looking for some specific information. I really would appreciate your help.

I know that on most home and pro versions of XP the activation and optional registration (if completed) are submitted in tandem.

However, on VLK versions where there is no activation, can/does Microsoft determine the authenticity of software through the optional registration alone?
