View Full Version : Virgin or -----?

Well folks, im in a dilemma.
I need a new cell phone.
As much as i love my current t39, I need to change.
Plastic breaking off, volume button broke and some keys sometimes dont work.
I'd love the Motorola V3 Razr, but at 400$ usd it's kind of expensive.
Anything you could suggest me that got bluetooth, gprs and looks sexy?
I don't like those new 'hip' flip-phones with cameras and ----. They'r so huge and bulky theres no way I'm gonna carry it in my pocket. They'r for women to carry them in purses. I need small, sleek and sexy, period.
Also, there's a new player in town, Virgin Mobile.
www.virginmobile.ca
They'r CDMA based and no sim-card phone will work with them.
They offer 3 phones:
http://www.futureshop.ca/multimedia/products/large/10057537.jpg
Nokia 6015i, maybe
AudioVox 8615, nah
and an AudioVox 8910, same as 8615 but with lil camera. I don't want.
free voicemail (leave/check msgs), call display, etc
25¢ per minute for the first five minutes each day,
15¢ per minute for the rest of the day,
balance lasts for 120 days
I love this 120 days balence thing.
My current ----- (Fido the dog) makes me re-fill every 15 or 30 days to to loose my account balence, annoying. Whereas with Virgin I could leave the money rot in my account for months. But at a trade-off. 50cents expensivier each day (25c for 5 mins), then my same rate, I'd have to switch phone numbers and be stuck with the Nokia 6015i.
Virgin = 25c/5mins then 15c/min /// ??$ card for 120days /// 100% free voicemail
Fido = 15c/min /// 15$ card for 15days or 30$ card for 30days (currently 60days promotion) /// costs money to check vocemail, even from landline (stopped using voicemail)
What would you do?
Virgin or -----?
I'm leaning towards staying with my -----, I think it would turn out less expensive in the long run. (50cents less daily)

and here I got excited for nothing.
I should have known better.
I figure that as long as my phone can make and receive calls I'm set. No way am i forking over $400 on a telephone.

A year or two from today and It'll sell for 50$ on ebay. Then I'll get it :)
Any ideas for something meanwhile?

I'd go w/ the RaZor. It's just a nice phone overall made with good quality. If you take care of it, it'll last you forever.

Im happy with using Virgin here (australia), and in England.

Virgin is using Telus' network here in Montreal... do you really want that?
Just buy a new phone if you really need to.

Once again, I'm lured into a thread by a misused title.
Wojtek
March 20th, 2005, 20:31
What's wrong with Telus?
I hunted all day for a ok cell phone but didnt find nothing.
Ended up with 4 cells on my list:
Ericsson T39m = rebuy my same model?
Kyocera Slider SE47 = No connectivity (gprs/bluetooth) :(
Nokia 2650 = no GSM1900 :(
Nokia 8910i = no GSM1900 :(
Damnit, lend me 400 Daniel :p

I used to sell Virgin Mobile, and they aren't good if you plan to use more than 300 minutes a month.
I see you have different rates than we do though. Here in the US its 25 cents for the first 10 minutes of each day and $10 cents a minute after that, so I am not sure how many minutes are optimal for you. I wouldn't go prepaid if you use more than 300 though, that was our general rule when deciding if we should sell someone a prepaid or contract phone.

yuck
I want a phone
I'd say my monthly usage is about 250 minutes
Like right on the edge of Prepaid/Contract
I don't take contract as I'd pay more. it would come out to 25 + tax + 7$network access + 911tax + ---- + 4$for call display = total of 40ish something
now im at 34.50 per month

You don't wanna go CDMA.. Virgin here in Aus. is GSM, which is ok.. My mate uses them and says they are good. But the fact your Virgin is CDMA, stay away, what if you want to change networks? Or if your battery runs down when you're on holiday and forget your charger, its not like you can stick your sim card in a mates phone.
Phones are a good investment...

it's people like you that ---- me the most.. buy a phone to use as a phone, not a ----ing mp3playerdigitalcameramaccasdrivethruforkonastickamabob, if you need a phone to justify your value in society, fine, just don't damn well play with your damn ringtones on the train..
gargh.. so pissed off.. bunch of those suckers on the train.. CURSE YOU KOROWA GIRLS! MAY YOU BURN IN HECK!

March 21st, 2005, 06:23
lol @ tandoc's comments. seems like a bit of private school rivalry or maybe sexual tension, just go make love to them already... i know what you mean though, bloody posers... whats worse than people who play their ringtones in public, is people who talk real loud on the phone.. like a couple of years ago, some hot Toorak College girl on the bus, that where i got the sexual tension thing from, we always made eye contact, but i never had the guts to go speak to her..

no.. for some reason i'm not interested in girls -- i'm not gay, but they're all ----ing idiots, and i've yet to meet one worth talking to, but that's obviously my fault, for not talking in the first place, i welcome you to flame me women of the board.. all 3 of you..
and i would not make love to a girl who's still in yr 7/8... (i'm in 11 btw.. it's just not RIGHT)
and having attended a private school most of my life, i can understand why people hate them, they're all snobs. not rich, uptight kinda people, just people who take everything for granted, and i can't wait for the day i'm their damn boss and i get to FIRE THEIR SORRY BEHIND.
back ontopic...
woj, buy the phone that suits your budget, draw a few simple linear graphs to work out what plan suits you (AHA! ALGEBRA DOES HAVE ITS USES)

maybe you are asexual... having a gender preference towards females, but just no real desire to be in a relationship. Triple J did a feature on it last year, really interesting.
Back on topic...
Go with a Nokia phone, I've never heard of a bad one.. except that first blue screen one they did. you can throw nokia's into a brick wall and they still work.

As for phones, I am very much over Nokia. I had a couple of Nokias over the years, since about 2000, and the batteries are rubbish, the screens get too wrecked to use, etc, etc. I don't think it's worth paying $400 for a phone. It's something you message your friends with, why pay $400 when you can pay $120? (I got my current phone for $120 a couple of months ago).
As for phones that do everything, I totally agree. Blech. I want a phone to call people, send messages, check the time on. The most advanced feature I use is the alarm feature. I don't want a phone with internet, games, mp3, whatever else. As tandoc said, all these people who think mobile phones are so cool? Trust me, they're not. It's just a phone, everyone has one, pretty much. People at work drive me insane with their mobiles. You're trying to settle their accounts, etc, and their phone goes off. Half the time they just answer it without even saying, 'Excuse me for a moment', then proceed to stand there and have a 20 minute, excessively loud phone conversation in your face. It's either a) they're trying to sound important or b) about absolutely random crap that could wait 5 minutes until I have finished serving them (ie what's for dinner tonight?) Arggh!!

And am I the only one fed up with all the threads going off in completely, ridiculously off-topic discussions?

I'm sorry, but if you paid $895AUD for a nokia, you surely got ripped off. The most I will spend on a phone is $400, but $895 dollars? I highly doubt it. What phone is it?

I do NOT want an ngage thing
I do NOT want an mp3 player phone
I do NOT want a 64-in-1 phone
I want a SEXY SLIM phone wth GPRS and BLUETOOTH so I can connect it to a laptop.
It has to be <2cm thick.
The phones that fit my description are my T39 and the V3 RazR (with some other stuff I won't use, but fits my size criterias)
Both look clean and proffesionnal.
I dunno, there's really not much good clean phones out there.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=64355&item=5761954192&rd=1
I might just purchase those and and replace stuff with mine as it breaks
I sure they'll last me 2 years until the razr drops down to 50-100 :p

March 21st, 2005, 17:21
Wojtus, lol, been a while havent been called that on a forum :p
I think I finally managed to make up my mind.
I'll repair my T39 :p
Found a place that sells replacement parts.
shell = 13$
microphone = 7$
I'll also order a light convertion kit, to change my green light to a blue one. I think it'll look beautifull with my blue shell.
+ screwdriver + shipping = ~50$ canadian
and I'll end up with a phone I love :)

Yes, we have a winner... The cheaper option is always better. Trust me, after a week of being excited about phone features, you get bored (unless you are one of those show-off gadget people).. I got a basic Nokia colour screen phone with GPRS, Java and the works for $120, and spent another $20 on a data cable. I haven't used any feature for a couple of months now. At first, i was like cool, I can sync with outlook, but then I thought why??
Daniel
March 21st, 2005, 18:41
I got an m55, got it free with my activation. I bought the data cable for $5 off ebay and use it to get free ringtones. Works like a charm.

I got mine for 3 years now and im not bored of the features of this goddess, really, thats what it is. I'm in love :p
Dumb people tend take a look at it and "oh, that looks old, buy a new one you cheap bastard". They think they can impress me with their huge clamshel brick with color screen and crapo vga camera. Not.
My ringtone is a normal landline phone ring, with a higher pitch.
"how original" - dude said (sarcastic tone)
of course its original, I never heard anyone having a normal ringtone. Never.

I'm with you on camera's, that's why I just went a plain colour screen. Unless you're gonna buy one of those $1200 phones with a 1.2megapixel digi cam, don't bother. But still, if you want to take a picture, why not use a digital camera?
Where has your display pic gone, and "The Polish Prince"..???

March 21st, 2005, 19:15
I'm redesigning myself :p
the one LEX sugegsted, the SE k750 has a 2.0 Mpx camera, wich is pretty decent actually.
But how often will I find myself using it?
Does that justify the extra price/weight/size, not for me.
When I know I'll have to make pics I bring my digicam.
On the other hand, I could see such thing suits some people.
Girls for example, love to make pictures of themselfs for no reason, in class, in the bus, and such, so for such people a 2-in-1 is good.

I have a Motorola V180. Free with my plan. Cheap, small, works. Not very skater-friendly, though: the little lcd screen on the lid cracked after a light fall, so now I have to open it to see who's calling or see the time. My old Nokia 6340i never cracked or anything, was a tank.

How about a Panasonic X800? Or BenQ P30. :p
The Panasonic X200 looks great, but minus bluetooth.
Other models:
Nokia 6260
GEO GX838 - funky look
Siemens S65
Dopod 575/585
SonyEricsson T630

You have some identity problems lex :biggrin2:
Panasonic and BenQ, meh
6260 = why does the screen turn? my pda's screen turns
Geo is fat (24.3mm), + no gsm 1900
Siemens S65, that one actually looks good + decent features
Dopod 585, too advanced
Out of all those, Siemens S65 wins, however it's about the same price as the V3 RazR, so no purchase :)

Personally I have a LG 5400 that I got free with my plan (from Bell :/) But my dad uses Bell and I'm on his family plan (I'm only 14 :P) It only costs me 20$ (CAD)/month and he's paying for a year :D This all comes with some nifty features such as: call waiting, conference calling (I think) caller identification or whatever we call it.
It's a bit large, which sucks for my pockets..but I like it. It performs as a watch/phone for me :) I downloaded a couple ringtones from MuchMusic, but they cost a lot and I ran my bill near 200$ off of that and internet charges (dumb...dumb...dumb) So I think I'm gonna grab a data cable if I can find one, probably better anyway :)
I got a case for it which works fine, and the colour screen is great for me.
The plan I am on currently also had a promotion: FREE CALLS TO ANY BELL CELLPHONE. :D:D:D
Sexy, no? Cept for the fact that not many people use Bell :( But I have after 6PM and Before 8AM and weekends free :)
So yea...I'm cool with what I got.
I would like a cellphone with an MP3 player though, it'd be pretty useful, though it would need at least 1GB of storage for me to bother, or allow USB Jump Drives/SD cards to be stuck inside for storage...
But as for other features...really not that useful to me.
I didn't get the camera phone I could have gotten free with it because I just didn't like the idea of a camera phone, like honestly, what am I ever gonna need to take a picture of? My friends (girls) are like "Why didn't you get a camera phone!! omg!!!" I'm like...cause I'm not a loser.
Honestly...our school doesn't even allow cellphones to be used in the school (bloody kids with pacemakers...who have cellphones of their own...----ing hypocrites) and even beyond that, no camera phones...but people have them and use them anyway (cellphones too) Most of the teachers don't care that much either..
Anyway...yea, and Wojtek...you bastard...pulling me in with that misrepresentative title :P

I have a v3 that i am not using. I bought it buy 1 get 1 free for my girlfriend and fortunately when we broke up she forgot the phone was worth hundreds and decided to give it back to me. I don't know if the phone itself will work in canadia and im not sure if you can change the language to french on the phone but if you can i would sell it to you for 150usd. it is new, been out of the package for about a week and a half. Included is a car charger, wall charger, leather case, plastic case, nylon case (all custom made by a poor indian woman), and already loaded with about $200 worth of ringtones and games (including lemonade tycoon).
