I have not really seen this anymore, but I seen a lot of it about 4 years ago. Somebody could lease a server in a datacenter and pay a monthly fee, just like they do today, but after a certain time period the server would physically become yours. They would then continue to house it in the datacenter, or they would send it to you if you requested.

Just out of curiosity, are there any such places anymore? I have had several people ask me about that recently and I did not have an answer for them.

Don't think there are any of these left, the only thing you can do now is buy the server from
the datacentre and then you just pay for the floorspace and bandwidth.
