i do think that geocities is making money.

thier ads are very mainstream and geared towards the internet newbie/intermediate. for the most part, anyone who can make a half decent web site will not use geocities. anyone who has a very technical or business oriented website will not use them as well. that only leaves the mainstream webmaster and his mainstream visitors.

comprendes?

I hope it doesn't affect Geocities, cause the last few months, I have many big hosting services seen dying or restricting their services :(

Would it really bother you that much if Geocities closed down?

No, that doesn't bother me, but I'm afraid that other (good) hosts as F2S will follow soon

It would bother me---overall, they have been great for several years...And why is that everyone says, 'Well, only beginners use Geocities..or anyone with a half decent website won't use Geocities.."? Where is THAT coming from?? I currently have two web sites on Geocities and I get compliments all the time on how professional they look. (No, I'm not trying to "toot" my own horn :) ) I currently use 3-4 different web hosts so I am not in my own "Geocities" world. I also see alot of crappy sites out there that are on paid hosts, so I am not exactly sure where this "elitist" "look my nose down on Geocities" attitude is coming from. Can someone clue me in?

Most of the people here don't like them because they don't support and scripting languages. but it's also their ads. They just look horrible.

I like it how there ads can be clicked away its pretty cool

I think only newbies really do us geocities (I mean in general of course theres some exceptions as with everything)

I would personaly like it if geocities shut down just because that would send alot of people going to services such as f2s.com and they would be doing better. On the other hand it would really suck for all of those people who have websites with them and thats alot of people

Ok, I admit their support stinks (although I only used them once) and they don't support CGI--that does bite---BUT, on the positive:

1. They have lasted longer than anyone.
2. They are pretty stable
3. They are generous with space and bandwidth
4. They are reasonably fast.
5. I rarely have troubles with FTP.
6. And you can close those ad squares out! :)

This must count for something! ;)

Heh heh--Ok, I guess "generous" is a relative term. For ME it is generous.....:p

In many ways, GeoCities is the pefect host for 90% of the free sites out there. They offer a good deal fo space and transfer, enough features and a friendly user interface. It's the other 10%, mostly the people who come here that need more features, more space and a better url.

Financially GeoCities is doing well but could be doing better. Yahoo has been hit hard by the advertising downfall but they still have enough assets to push on. The geocities division hasn't downsized or atleast not that Iv've heard of. Still, compred the orginal GeoCities company which yahoo bought for 5.8 BILLION, GeoCities has gone down.

Should GeoCities fall complete (something that will most likely not happen), it would be a clear sign that free hsoting was virtually over. After all, they have more backing than any host out there so even if you hate them, at least realize they are the image upon which other hsots survive.

I think that there popularity tends to work against them for those people who know alot about web hosting.

Yes but NBCi was loosing money fast, GeoCities is no God but they've got a lot more coming in and a much more stable modle then NBCi.

I think Geocities is pretty nifty and think about it, they give reliable service on fast servers. Most free hosts don't give scripting anyways thats what bravenet is there for.

And their ad is probably the best I've seen on free web hosts because its really small. I'd rather have 1 small pop than 5 big ugly ones.

I think NBC lowered the budgets of certain TV shows and closed down NBCi because they lost money in The XFL :)

well then nbci must have still been losing alot of money because there a big company and if they were gaining, or even close to gaining money they would have never shut down
