To get a "Google Key", you first need to create and account:
https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount?continue=http://api.google.com/createkey&followup=http://api.google.com/createkey

What exactly did you want to accomplish the with API? Asking how to use it is a pretty broad question in itself.

I would suggest reading documentation on the API first:
http://www.google.com/apis/reference.html
http://www.google.com/apis/api_help.html
http://www.google.com/apis/api_faq.html

Also, I would read up on how to access the API using your preffered programming language:
http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Internet/Searching/Search_Engines/Google/Web_APIs/

(I personally use the PyGoogle API wrapper. It is very easy to work with)

And finally, it is 1000 querys per 24hrs, per key. 1000 queries should be more than enough, as only you should be using your own key.

Hope that helps

Why would someone want a "Google Key?"
I'm not being sarcastic, I'm interested in the potential benefits that would make a person want a "Google Key."

Gee, with everything in my life Google: Google's Gmail, Google's Blogger, Google's search engines, I am starting to feel like a trapped rat in a Google maze. What about my life doesn't Google know? :ditsy2:

I know "Google Keys" are used for a few things, however, the only thing that comes to mind right now is for use with the API.

The key must be sent out with every call you make to the API.

Google is like Orwells 1984. Better be careful what you say in front of the screen from now on.
