I have DSL!

I wish I had DSL (or broadband of any kind) but I'm still poking along at 56k :(
Bruce

Yeah it would be nice to have broadband. I still have 56k though too, although at times I wonder if my connection actually is that fast.

I really doubt whether my connection is actually where it should be either. (around 48k I think, but I could be wrong) We have Earthlink for Internet, (we wanted out of AOL and Earthlink was rathed #1 by C|net twice so we went with them) but Earthlink sucks where I live. The connection can be painfully slow - and not just at peak times. It drops constantly too. We're considering switching, but we're not sure what to switch too. I'm hesitant to try MSN, and I never want to go back to AOL. We had Verizon (back when it was GTE Internet), but that was worse than AOL. I'm thinking maybe a local provider would be a better choice than one of the big national ones.

I use 256K ADSL..
Bruce
June 27th, 2001, 21:46
Well my connection speed right now is actually only 37k. I use AOL becuase its the only (affordable) option around here.

I've got a 128KB modem line... not the best but it can actually go faster than cable lines in my area.
I have cable and love it, 4000kbps normally, 3000kbps is the minimum ive seen.

i have multiple T1s at school (i get to do whatever i want as long as it's not illegal, i'm a trainee network admin). at home, i only have a need for 56000 bps transfer because I work out of an SSH terminal
our school blocks every single port except the net, even outgoing ports, so we cant access ftp, ssh, telnet, etc.

doesn't your school have a user server? ssh to that then ssh elsewhere.
all our school's servers run NT :(

you could create a perl script that allows you to run commands at let it display the results.

I dunno what we have at school but crappy crappy
when its not down its slower than you could ever amagin
hehe, I wonder if they even have perl installed. You have no idea - the technology department at my school is completely idiotic.

At my school they have windows 2000 with cable(for the whole school!), it's really slow. I think it's only one cable line connected to all the computers(approximately 145).

I have a 56k modem, but i can only connect at 28.8. Cable will never be availabl in my area, nor wil DSL or ADSL. if i am lucky i will get sattelite.

Mine's IDSL (yes, that's an "I" - don't ask) 128K. Well, it's supposed to be, but I haven't felt the speed yet. :(

Don't you mean, (yes that's an "I"-don't ask)? Or did you mean ISDN, but mispelled it?

It's "IDSL", in lowercase "idsl", pronounced "eye-dee-es-el". I said, don't ask!

My home connection is 56k. I dont have cable/adsl access yet but when its available I will get it probably 512/128k
My school has a crummy 64k ISDN line that powers around 80 computers. It takes around 5 minutes during class to power up this site!
Stupid 64k.
They pay $450 per month for it *Australian Dollars* with 1gb bandwidth limit.

Gosh, 10Mbit and it is running at 100k? You are getting jipped, my 256K ADSL is faster than your 10Mbit Cable... knew ADSL is better..

Direct 10Mbit satellite connection to Verio backbone! :)
Just Kidding :D
I have a 128kbps cable connection which always stays around 128k. Only problem the cable modem keeps going offline every now and then. One more statistic : I have downloaded 1.35 gigs this month.

I have a 56 K modem. I generally get connected at 50 - 53 kbps. We do have COX cable in our area. I was thinking about gettin cable modem through COX but, I am not on the internet that much and don't generally download much.

I have a download limit of 10GB/mo and 2GB/mo upstream. To bad, I can't run a FWP. But I'm running a host. URL xxx.dynu.com [no, it's not xxx, but I'm not telling the URL, cause that would overflow my cable)

if i want to download something, i download it from school. :)
i only do work and post on forums. thus, a 56K is good enough.

Here's some answers:
IDSL is a type of xDSL service. Slower than ADSL.
Also, a 100kbyte download speed is faster than any
128 kbit ADSL connection by alot.
Also, I have cable. I can download at up to 800kbytes per second! Only happened once though (real late at night) :(

I don't know about this~
I am using Rogers @Home Cable, but I am not sure about the connection.... is it 1.5MB ?
My download speed is about 290KB/sec and Upload Speed is around 50KB/sec

No it is not, 128kbyte ADSL is faster than the 100kbyte Download SPeed. I of course use 256kbyte ADSL... faster than any cable service I ever used, and much more secure.

My ADSL service is 256kbyte not 256kbit.

can't you just make the B capitalized?

kb = kilobit

That's sad. I want SDSL :D I don't really know the exact spped, but it's around 100mB(yte?)/s!
Giancarlo
June 29th, 2001, 13:02
You mean ADSL... and it only goes up to 512Kbytes. Never heard of SDSL, don't think it exists.
Bruce
June 29th, 2001, 13:56
Yes, it does exist, Giancarlo.
sDSL=Symmetric DSL
aDSL=Asymmetric DSL
sDSL has speeds of up to 1.5mbps downstream and upstrseam.
Giancarlo
June 29th, 2001, 15:12
I don't know how you can tell the difference, because when you are downloading it depends on the server. And if the server can only go 20K when you are downloading from Download.com or something, it will only go 20k on ADSL, SDSL, T1, or T3. It won't go any faster because the server has its limitations.
You get my drift? Usually downloads are slower than what the speed promises because the server has limitations and could be backlogged, from whatever server that could be.
Just explaining to people sometimes you can download any faster than what it is, no matter how high your internet connections gets because of server backlog.
gyrbo
June 29th, 2001, 15:14
But if you have high speeds, you can download more things at ones.
Giancarlo
June 29th, 2001, 15:16
But I was talking about single downloads. All will reach the Server Burst Rate of what is usually 20k for most servers.

get DAP here (http://www.speedbit.com/)
its great it opens up multiple connections and downloads 7 differnt parts of the file at once
so if the server is capped at 20k/user at a time and the server thinks your 7 differnt people each wanting a differnt part of the file
20*7=140k/sec (if your connection can go that fast)
it works great on my computer I get speeds around 20-30k withoiut it and 70-112k with it
it only works on servers that can resume though

Get FlashGet at http://www.amazesoft.com
It opens up to ten connections and I got up to 800KBs with it. That's almost a meg a second!
BTW, Giancarlo, what's your fastest dl speed?
Who?
June 30th, 2001, 00:13
i have cable with AT&T, and its great:) 700KB downstream but only 50KB upstream and its so fast:)
the one bad thing is cable is new in my area so nobody has it but us, so we asked the guy who install it how many other homes will we share the line with and it was 124 other homes:(

When downloading from a Private Server when no one is on it is about 200k.. but only 20k when downloading from Download.com due the site's server restrictions.

I've got cable with @Home:
4000kbs (about 495kBs) download and 128kbs (16kBs) upload...
the upload part really sux... but they're going to do nothing about it. Luckily I've got no bandwidth limit, because I think I download about 25GB every month, some months even more.

lemme think.... 56k = $9/mo... DSL = $40/mo + plus hardware
for most people, dialup is fine.
