http://hostrim.com/ is a free hosting service that places a small ad at the top of each hosted page -- just a pretty search bar with a button, and much nicer looking than Google Adsense.
You can see an example of hostrim's ads on http://ledbetter.hostrim.com/
Last week I mentioned http://havesite.com/ and http://www.amfr.xthost.co.uk, but they did not stick around for long. http://www.amfr.xthost.co.uk was part of the http://www.amfr.org/ network, which brings together sites that provide free hosting for a week or two before ending it all due to alleged abuse or repair.
http://havesite.com/ and http://www.amfr.xthost.co.uk were up for 2 or 3 weeks and then folded. Maybe they will be back someday, only to go down again?
I'll try to keep you up to date on my blogs http://research.90megs.com/blogmax/ and
