i need a host for a music related bulletin board.

now the best ones ive seen so far are:

tera-byte

100meg space
20 gig b/with

for $9.25 a month

or

hostrocket.com
300meg space
12gig b/with

for $9.95 a month

theyre both great deals but as you are all prolly aware the thing im gonna need more with runnin a bulletin board is b/with compared to space. but ive heard some not so great reports about tera-byte on other forums concerning downtime etc.

just wonderd what you guys thing as you lot live breath n erm eat webspace so I thought id ask the best people I could what they think :)

Also how about speed (not the drug) are they both pretty quick providers, is one quicker than the other? And how about support.

Sorry for bombarding you all with questions, id just rather get my webhost right first time as it will save me a lot of hassle in the long run.

many thanks in advance people

don't know about hostrocket, but TB has had some excellent reviews anywhere i look. I seem to be one of the few to have had long downtime, but it seems their RAQ is working fine now. Must've been temporary, seeing as it only lasted a few months. The MySQL server seems to be up a lot more as well.

Tera-byte isn't bad. Plus it's $99/yr for 99megs... :D

anyway, i signed up online. Why wouldn't you?

Actually Tera-Byte is in Canada, not the US, but when I signed up with them, back in December, I was able to do it online.... Unless something has changed since then.

Okay,

I have been a customer of both firms. I can safely say that tera-byte is far superior to hostrocket on all levels, Server speed, Technical Support and Bang for the Buck. I found that HostRocket had a lot of pointless features that are not required where as tera-byte have what is needed and nothing fancy. Plus HostRockets Technical support team is rather snotty nosed.

Ratings :

Tera-byte - 10 / 10

HostRocket - 7 / 10

The part that impresses me is Steve often stops by various forums to make sure that customers are happy and he will personally deal with issues. It's nice to see that in a company of their size. I won't give any direct advice as I have no direct experience with them but Steve does seem to care about his customers and reputation.

Steve the owner took 30 minutes of his precious time the other week to call me at home to explain all the problems with the network, support emails being logged slowly and other minor issues. And true to his word within 24 hours all problems were solved and everything was fine and dandy. Cant go wrong when the CEO of a company that large calls you personally, Dont see the CEO of companys like Interland and hostpro calling up customers too often.

thanks for the advice people, looks like tera-byte have a new customer :)

if it wasnt for you guys id probably be spending a hell of a lot more for webhosting as finding the good deals seems one of the hardest parts (apart from paying for it of course) :)

keep up the good work!

And what exactly does Tera-byte suck?

How many companys do you that will do 40 odd minutes work on ur server and not charge you anything? I think if you asked brenda if his techs at hostrocket would do that hed say no.

Something that might be of interest...

Tera-byte is the parent company of spaceports who just implemented the largest ad frame in FWH history, and looks like it's about to die.

I wouldn't call a single 60-pixel-high frame at the bottom of the page "the largest ad frame in FWH history" and no, Spaceports isn't about to die.

i think that's the cheesiest thing i've ever seen. get a huge user base built up, then switch them over to a freaking ad-frame. pretty spineless if you ask me.

then you gotta think: a lot of the more popular sites there have so much stuff uploaded to them content-wise [with the unlimited space and all] that they have no choice but to stick it out with spaceports rather than change everything over to another host. it's pretty sad.

I don;t think it's spineless have you taken a look at what they offer?

unlimited space
up to 20 GB of transfer for your site per month
a free domain name
your own cgi-bin
PHP scripting
MySQL database support
helpful user forums and real-time support chat rooms

All this and we pay you up to $0.10/click for the advertisements you display on your free site.

You name one other provider who does that for free and even pays you for having the banners pop-up? You need to get a grip keith.
