I wouldnt use automated search engine submissions for a number of reasons. There are far less than 140 search engines that count and for the ones that count you dont even need to submit/resubmit. Just get your site listed with other sites (directories for instance) and the search engines will get it from there.

About the 140 search engines: Many of these engines are European. You won't usually find references to them here in North America, but they have included my sites on their engines and I have received hits from them and from Europeans looking for specific European search engines.

You guys sometimes advise against automated submissions, but you never provide data/facts to back up what you say. Small European search engines are unlikely to randomly crawl your sites. You have to bring your site to their attention. If everyone relied exclusively on big search engines for traffic, this world wide web would not be a net--just a one-way toll road.

Even MSN offers automated multiple search-engine submissions (but please note that their service is not free). See for example http://search.microsoft.com/search/results.aspx?st=b&View=en-us&s=8&c=0&qu=submit

Microsoft says,
Maintaining top listings on a variety of search engines helps drive new visitors to bigfishtackle.com. . . . It's very important to stay diligent with search engine submissions. . . . When he's pressed for time, he knows that [automatic submissions are] still working for him, automatically checking his listings and resubmitting URLs on a regular basis.

Again, I'm just using Microsoft's paid service as an example.

Where's your proof? That business bases its high-profile operation in La Jolla, California. La Jolla is the wealthiest suburb in San Diego, and California has many of the toughest laws in the United States, including the strike-three law that puts you in prison for life when you commit more than 2 felonies (armed robberies, for example).

The business seems to be doing well. Time will tell.
