how does vbulletin work when i pay them do they send me the script or does it send me a complicated request script that gets the code from thier site and uses it?

You pay for access to their members area where you download it as well as any updates and add-ons.

I believe you are allowed to use it as long as you want, you just won't have access to the members area for updates when your license expires. Don't quote me on that though.

will result in the version being illegal. Where Jelsoft will take action.

(Sorry, just did.) If you buy the $160 license that would be the case (that gets you perminant usage rights but only a year of access after which you have to pay another $35 or so to add more years of access if you want newer versions). But the $85 license is just one year, after which you have to remove it from your site if you don't re-purchase.
