So far the only alternative I've found is WinMX, but it isn't really the Georgie Best - anyone had any joy? Gnutella sounded promising, and I got BearSearch but it didn't work

I want my free music!

I usually use LimeWire (a gnutella agent) to search for MP3's. I also had the same problem with BearShare, that's why I use this. The interface looks nice :)

Audiogalaxy Satellite, damn good service. It's great at high quality songs, especially rare remixes. You can just add songs to your queue, and it will download them whenever they are available.

Since moving from Napster to Audiogalaxy, getting songs have been much easier.. But thing is that sometimes the servers are getting too flooded with users, so using their webpage interface gets sluggish at times.

I always love buying cds.. In fact i used to purchase CDs to run my shoutcast station. However, here in Australia, CDs are no longer 10 -$20.. they are $30+ and im not bill gates at the moment. But hey, I did shell out for the new radiohead and tool :) It pretty much set my wallet on fire!

Interesting... Audio Galaxy Satellite topped ICQ in the most downloads. Therefore, they probably have the widest selection of songs because of the large amount of users.

I use Morpheus(http://www.musiccity.com)... I find it pretty good, but the program itself is buggy at times. Some people I have talked to say they have other troubles with it on downloading, but I use AOL and it downloads just fine for me. :)

i love buying cds too, i usually buy a few per week. depending on how much disposible income i gots. however i refuse to shell out $22 for a poor sound recording from the 60s or 70s that is only 40 minutes long, those are the cds i download.

When I want free music(which is a rarity) I search lycos or google from underground sites that the Recording Industry deems "Illegal", but they have good stuff.

If you ever have problems disposing off your disposable income, you can always dispose it off into my bank account! ;) :D.

Super fast for me. :) THe beauty lies in the fact that unlike others it connects to multiple users effectively increasing the download speed. Something like DAP.

It seems (relatively) fast for me too.

I can't download anything at more than 4kB/s but that's not the point.

I love music.... MP3 format is great CD quality format.

I only have a 56 k modem and don't have a lot of time to wait for a song or songs to download to my PC for listening. I am a busy boy.

So if I have to have that song or songs from a particular artist I generally go out and buy the CD.

HGW - ' Napsters dead.... next ':p

I'm gonna try it, Limewire never gives me good downloads.

I don't do much downloading, but I use WinMX, now... my bro does a lot, and he likes "Win MP3 Locator".. he said he got it off of cnet downloads.. I've downloaded about 5 songs.. he's downloaded over 100. he had about 3 gig of files from napster, until he reformatted... I backup up his files, but *forgot* most of his mp3s. hehe

I like to buy CD's too.

Don't know why you guys are complaining, I get them real cheap. Like, ah, 10 bucks for 10? :D

Yeah, blank ones. Then I download and burn all the albums I want. :) I use Audiogalaxy.

It's got more than napster ever had, and it's easier and much more reliable.

I like Morpheus because you can download the same file from many users at the same time speeding up your download. I've topped off at 570kb a second sometimes.

Audiogalaxy Satelite is probably the best service if you want to find high-bitrate files. Most places you'll be able to find 192K, but nothing above that. Since I burn almost all of my mp3s to a CD, I always try and get mp3s that have bitrates of 256K+. I don't hear much of a difference between 256K and 192K when I'm just playing them in winamp, but 256K sounds a lot better after you re-convert it into a wave and put it onto a CD.

The reason for this is that mp3 is a lossy compression scheme, basically meaning the quality can never match the original. It can come *very* *very* *very* close, and you probably won't even be able to tell the difference in anything above 192K, but when you have to uncompress the mp3 and change it from a 8MB file to a 45-60 MB file, there will be some noticeable quality loss. But if I get the original mp3 encoded in a bitrate of 256/320K (sounds like a ----- to download and a space monger, but I have a cable modem and a 40GB hard drive ;-0 ), there isn't a whole lot of quality loss.

Anyway, I'm almost always able to find songs in bitrates higher than 192K on AGSatelite. Sometimes I would be lucky to find 192K songs on Napster.

The only bad thing about AG is that it comes with a spyware program called webhancer. There are a few websites that allow you to download AG with the spyware *removed*. If you can't find them, or you've already downloaded it, go download a program called "AdAware" from download.com. It should remove it and other spyware that might be on your system.

I also like morpheus because you can pause the download, ant it will always resume; even the next day.

I dont like high bitrate files because they take too long for me to download. I never go below 128 kb/s though.

i always look for files over 192 unless its spoken word or something like that. rodie, just a question. why do you convert the mp3s to wave before burning? i never had to do that. i have about 6 gigs i've download over the past 8 months on a 56k.

I use limewire, has some great collections, I have over 100 mp3's on my harddisk. And the gooh thing is you can download other stuff like apps (where did that photoshop5.zip file come from?) and pics, but I never download any:rolleyes: .

Thanks you guys. I'm taking all the names and URLs down. I've just upgraded my crappy PC with some extra space in the hard drive for one or a few hundred mp3s. Napster is pretty much useless nowadays, and I can't seem to get Gnutella to work. Morpheus, here I come! :D

You can allways use www.usepad.com and search the net for mp3's!

That's the only way you can get them to play on a normal CD player. If you have a new cd player that can also play mp3s, then there's no need to re-convert/decompress them. If you have one of those, then more power to you. I want to get a portable one in a few months.

But if you're making a normal music cd (i.e. the cds you burn can be played in any old CD player), then the mp3s are converted to waves before being burned. You may not notice this since many programs (Adaptec Easy CD Creator, Nero, etc.) will do the conversion on the fly, but they are still converted to waves. The reason for all this is that .wav is the standard audio format that all audio CDs are encoded with. If you just burned the mp3s straight to a CD, your CD player wouldn't read it correctly, unless of course it has mp3 decoding capabilities.

In my opinion... File Sharing apps are so much easier to use than websites (I hate those @#%& popups  )

Also, the time needed to find a good song on a file sharing app is faster than it would be on a website.

That's cool. I didn't really understand that they got converted automatically either until I read some cd burner faq.

I use Nero for my burning. Those mp3>wave build in convertors are pretty cool.
