Can somebody please explain to me what these are and what each of them are used for.

I have very basic knowledge in these terms and would like to know more.

DNS (doman name system) is the way that internet domain names (www.hotmail.com)are located and translated into IP adresses. It is basically a resource for converting friendly Hostnames (like hotmail.com) which humans can
easily understand, into IP addresses which machines need to communicate to the host.
