Which do you prefer? While there is no solid answer to this question, one of the most common however is, "It depends!"
Even the most uninitiated of new web users seem to buy into the ongoing theory that Microsoft products are mostly used for their ease of use, while Linux has been known as a technology for computer nerds!
Generally the basic user group is made of web noobs who want to be connected online but don't really want to spend the time or funds for a sophisticated website. Ease of use, and pricing are the 2 main look at points!
Example of windows users are: Lets say a customer has Mircosoft Frontpage on their home pc. Well than, it is quite common for that customer to want to have a windows based hosting package. Although Linux based servers usually support Frontpage, they are kind of limited and can lead to discouragement when a specific feature or features is required but will not work on that server.
On the other hand basic, static websites on linux boxes are hard to beat in reliability and value. Going with a windows server in this case might not be a very wise choice considering the customer would more than likely be paying a premium price on a Windows based server, but not using a single feature it offers that Linux doesn't :)
Some hosting companies have even started to offer their customers web design software for free, or might offer a web based design interface that provides a comprehensive selection of accessories and options, most likely servering as a one stop shop where users can get everything they need for optimal online presence all in one place.
What is your position on Windows Vs. Linux??

Fedora Linux. The one bad experience I had with Windows led me to switch to Linux forever.

I started my whole LLC back in 1998, there wasn't much of a choice, Windows was King... Unix seems to be great for websites, basic, websites, php growing and MySQL has really led Unix to take off...
My real BIG Paying Customers, (I'm talking 6 digits per year) go on my original trusted Windows Network.
Works for me.

Redhat and CentOS (same thing just no support)
I'm not a big Windows fan when it comes to OS for servers

Personally,i think linux is the best in terms of security but of course.. if you client needs asp, then windows could be the only option

Well according to an eMarketer's Linux Usage and Trends report many business users are becoming more comfortable running complex and mission critical applications on the Linux OS. During the past few years, Linux has increasingly made its way to the enterprise space due to its relatively low cost and reputation as a stable OS.
Further research from market analyst groups estimate that worldwide Linux sales reached $3.3 billion in 2003 :) Additionally, Linux server revenue will triple to 9.6 billion by 2008

After continousily reinstalling windows because of spyware and virus i now permanently use Linux as a Workstation, KDE/Desktop. (i find my pc is not breaking anymore and its always fast!)
Linux does have its errors/bugs to but compared to windows i can handle these bugs. it beats the slowness and spyware u get with windows.
I no longer even need a virus scanner installed, i Dont need any adaware programs, All the software is free and there is lots of it to!.
Migrating to linux can be hard but once you get use to it i cant imagine any sane person would want to use windows as there Workstation EVER AGAIN.
Anyone interested in downloading and installing linux,
Get the ISO's HERE:

Not so, I know someone who prefers IE over Firefox. If that is posssible, anything is.

Security about Win vs *Nix is a neverending argument... your server is as only good as the Admin behind it. I see vulnerabilities on both platforms, all the time.

I like IE better aswell. I even installed it on Linux using WINE, but it takes ages to start up in linux. FireFox has grown on me in a big way, I dont really feel the need to use IE anymore.
What i mean about migrating being hard;
if your a windows user your use to having IE and those windows based applications, so when u flip to lin you miss alot of things, but eventually you replace them with new toys/programs (like firefox and the IE as an example.).
Its like a smoker not having his drug.
Also it can be a nightmare if you dont know much about linux, like if your X Windows fails to starts and you need to login without GUI and edit the xf86config/xorg.conf with emacs/vi/pico or something(example).

I work on windows because I need the software (photoshop, studio mx). All of my sites are hosted on linux, and I do tinker with SUSE linux in my free time. It's nice but the software just isnt where I need it yet. THe tools like WINe and crossover office are very slow too. If adobe systems came out with their new suite for linux with the same price and features as the windows version, I would def. purchase it and switch.

I second :) However, we are still offering customer Linux packages unless they need to run ASP, .NET with Access, MS SQL...
