I ask because while I was at work today, my forum was hacked...and then deleted. I'm kinda confused, because I have no idea who did it and why they'd want to. It's a pretty nothing forum, so I imagine for someone to seek it out and take it down I would have had to do something. I'm a little pissed off, you know, becuase I did put some work into it, and I didn't worry about security, because honestly, I never thought anyone would ever want to do this...it's just strange.
So yeah...I'm sorry if I pissed you off, hacker... :confused4

bascially, how many other places you have made such a topc?
saying this to that person only will make him laugh.
you should just pretend nothing had happened and rebuild the forum, maybe he does 1 or 2 more times, and will not do it any more because it doesn't hurt you at all.
plus, i wouldn't think you had pissed off anyone.

I can't say I'm really that upset. Forums are easy to rebuild, especially one that had nothing going for it :p I'm just more confused than anything. I have no idea why someone would waste their time with my forum, is all. I'm guessing whoever did it has some idea as to who I am, and would know that hacking it really wouldn't make me wanna cry or anything. I'm basically too lazy to care that much.
Or use something that isn't easily exploitable :p

Don't you make backups of your files and databases?
Blank Verse

yeah, obviously. But i never thought of having to do that, because, really, there's nothing to gain from hacking my forum. It's not like it was some high security challenge for anyone.

Don't you make backups of your files and databases?
yes, but not very regularly :p

Was probably just somebody googling for every available copy of a certain version of whatever forum software it was that they knew how to exploit, presuming there was a "powered by blah 1.0.0" or the like at the bottom of the page.

One of my clients (with about 10,000 members) was running phpBB and he too got hacked. They corrupted his tables, etc and the backup we have was made right after they corrupted his forum, so he got a corrupted backup.
It sucks.

I think either it had something to do with that juvenile drama that was going on there recently, or like Hoth suggested, it was random.
It sucks, I agree. :(

Could not have said it any better myself.
Unless I inserted the actual mom joke. But I think that's a reference to my mother...so therefore...I hate you all.

Oh, as opposed to all the non-juvenille posting there...
I really doubt it would have been anyone you know...just some random jackass finding your forum from google and thinking that a good use of time would be to run simple exploit script.
I suppose one may find it flattering that someone felt your forum worthy of their 1337 hax0ring skillz...no one ever hacked my forum...HAXo0RZ!
Although I'm a little pissed off because it was sort of one of the three forums I visited daily...now all I get is a 404 error (which is my doing...because it looks nicer than the "You were 0wn3d by...such and such" page).

yeah, I would say it was random too, I had my forum hacked about three years ago and it just made me feel too ill to even bother rebuilding it. And it was just in the works, not even publicised yet. Ironically the domain name of it was "stolen" about six months ago but I managed to get it back as well as my hotmail account which appeared to be hacked in order to "hopefully" get the rego details for that domain. They could have stolen several domains by doing that :S My password now is so tight I have to copy and paste it every time I log in :D

That is really not cool whatsoever. =(
At least you managed to recover the stolen domain name though.
