I'll follow the trend and say Google. In the rare occurrence that Google doesn't find it I use MetaCrawler.com.

is google the only ad-free search engine? how are they getting the revenue to keep their service up?

Sometimes they have ads when you search for something specific. For example, if you type in 'Host' there is an ad for featureprice.com on the right side of the page

if i dont find it on google, i search individual sites (not those that look like personal sites i.e geocities/angelfire) or web directories like dmoz.org, or even more specific ones like anipike.com

For most things, I use Google as well.

But, I have found, that if I am searching for something like a particularl musical group... google doesn't give me the best results. So if i'm after something like that I use Dmoz; otherwise it's google all the way!

I used to use all these other search engines. One day I had to search for some pictures of Japan. All the other search engines turned out useless junk. Since the project was due tomorrow, I used what I thought to be a dumb search engine, Google.

BAM! I had page after page of the right pics.

Haven't used another search engine since.

I use GoTo.com, Webcrawler, DogPile.com, Go.com, geocities, yahoo, lycos, and all those others ;)

Todd
July 7th, 2001, 15:14
Actually that's a great addition GoTo.com. If I'm looking for something commercial as in a specific product and it's something other then computer hardware (PriceWatch.com, PriceGrabber.com, Shopper.com, etc) then I will search at GoTo.com. It adds a little bit of authenticity to the company, as you know they're willing to pay for the traffic so it makes them more credible. Probably not the most accurate assumption but it does seem a bit more credibly then a search engine that analyzes a commercial site for keyword algorithms.

Google too.

When did this company pop up anyway? I used to use Yahoo... I first heard of Google there, when Yahoo started using Google instead of that Inktomi whatever-it's-called.

I use Google and Yahoo the most. I will sometimes use Altavista, Lycos, or Hotbot when getting more info on particular articles.

Do a search on Homeygwiz and you will get my website in all of them.

I don't like trying to promote websites in Yahoo though... Most of the times I cannot get the sites on Yahoo.
