Do you think a cable modem would be able to support a single 5000 pageviews a day website? I am thinking of hosting my own site, it would be run off a server with a 400mhz cpu, 320mb of ram, Windows 2000, Apache, PHP and MySQL.

I should note the upload speed is 120kb per second

Cable don't work man. Trust me I know, from experience. The cable company will find out. Especially with 5000 visitors a day. They say woah, a huge amount of bandwidth is coming from blah blah blah and they'll find out and shut you down for good. Yeah it sucks, but that's the way it is. DSL is the same too btw.

120 both ways? I had ran into problems when people on certain isp's (especially ISDN) tryed to access my site when it was on cable. Well, it was actually a shoutcast server, but they also had trouble accessing the webserver that is included in shoutcast.

Well a friend of mine has been running an FTP server on the same ISP (in the same city as me) for over two years now and he hasnt got caught. The server itself is pulling about 2.5GB per day.

The max size files I would host would be about 30kb, just for a simple page.

Say that one visitor uses up 100kb per visit, that is still only 30mb for a one hour peroid. Also the way I have it setup is that if you go through my IP address you wont get a page but if you go through the domain you get connected to a diffirent port and the traffic is hidden as regular upload traffic.

On and I only have a 120kb per sec upstream (not k bits but actual kb's) but the downstream is much faster.

Oh and I looked through my cable company's TOS, and they really don't care what you do as long as you don't slow down the network for other users.

Im in canada... and using Cogeco@home, and in the TOS they even say you cant run an FTP, IRC, HTTP, or other type servers.... I don't know which cable company yor all using but running a highly used server off a cable is I guess a no no. Put it this way, what if your neighbor had an FTP using 2.5 GB of bandwidth a day slogging down your connection to either a hault or a really unsatifying speed? I mean I understand now, this is because my connection is getting slower by the day, and I notice how many more CABLE servers are popping up. Sooner or later cable is going to be super slow in my area and I dont want this so... i'll just pay for my server ;)

Don't think cable would work and with DSL, ADSL won't work, you need either SDSL or HDSL.

Maybe VDSL will...

I have cable. Rogers@home. I live in Toronto and that is the service we get (Cogeco@home is for people in Oakville). At some times I find the service slowing down, but Rogers boosts up the bandwidth within 30 minutes or so. I don't care if my neighbour is pulling 2.5 GB a day, because it really doesn't slow down my internet connect that much. On the other hand with phoneline, iDirect, which is a big ISP in my area, slows down and even kicks users off whenever it feels like it to accomodate more users and bandwidth is still even slow. BTW, on Canada Day, while accessing this board I got a slow 0.2 KB/s! (phoneline). So, actually a 5000 hit a day website wouldn't be that bad to host. I got myself an ftp server, so why can you. Heheh, TOS. Love to break them!

Your running your host of a cable! Good luck. You should get at least a T1. You would also need to setup an FTP server.

No.. I have Yupapa.com (not running on a cable)

I am just learning how to install Apache Server + Perl + etc, not planning to build a new hosting company.
