View Full Version : My Rant of Referring Links

Okay, I tried to post a referring link in the ad board (i'm most likely going to get banned, but oh well), and it wouldn't let me.

My question is why?

You answer I don't know.

But if it's anywhere along the lines of: The board is for advertisements not trying to get people to click a referring link so you can get stuff at the other person's extent.

I say:

Well, it IS advertising. And, what with the "at the other person's extent."? Oooo, the person clicked a link, that's SOOO hard! The link I posted could get them alot of cool stuff for free. And, what's the matter with a guy trying to get himself free stuff? Wouldn't you want some? I can't post the link ANYWHERE! All the major fourms have them blocked.

My question again is why? What's the point? How is it hurting anyone?

It comes from the ---------.com scams, in which resulted spam. (Yes, we realize it was a pyramid scheme, but w/e)

I think this is the case anyway.

Yes, I know there's scams, but is it really necessary to block anything with the letters "r e f I D" in the link? Come on, not everything's a scam, and if you really want to make sure, have an admin or moderator check the link out first.

If referal links were allowed, then everyone would be spamming the boards with them.

It is as simple as that.

Not if they post in the correct boards. If they go around all the boards saying "CLICK HERE", yes that would get annoying by the frist post.

But, if there's a designated board, such as the advertisement board, and come on, that's nothing but spam, then the spam would be fixed. I assume that you can change the word-blocking in different forums? If not, vB should add that, it would be usefull.

All I'm saying is that an innocent person just looking for somewhere to post a link so he can get 75 points on a website that gives things away for free, can't even do that because everyone is blocking referring links.

I wouldn't count all referring links as spam anyways. Many of them I find quite helpful. That's how I found freeNezy.

BTW, I'm surprised i haven't been banned yet.

HOW HARD IS IT, THIS IS A FORUM FOR DISCUSSING FREE WEB SPACE AMONG OTHER THINGS! WE AREN'T HERE TO CLICK YOUR CRAPPY REFFERAL LINKS SO YOU CAN GET YOUR FREE ----ING IPOD SHUFFLE.

TAKE IT OFF THESE FORUMS AND TAKE IT YOUR OWN BOARD.

-sigh- How many times do we have to go over this until it's drilled in people's heads.

AND - The "Ads & Offers" board is not for whoring your links. It is for companies and other users to advertise LEGIT services not related to Webhosting.

^Right there.

It is for companies, and individual users posting their own services or products. It is *NOT* for advertising a sevice you like or w/e. Very strict rules allow for a very smooth community.

With a good set of rules, little moderation is needed, and especially when you have the community you have, they do a lot of the moderating themselves. This is the best kind of community to have.

First of all, I'm not just talking about the Ads & Offers. I'm talking about everything under the GENERAL category. And, if people don't want to click the links, they don't have to. No need to get hostile. And, if you had a chance to get something for free, and you were guaranteed that you would get it, wouldn't you want it? Don't even lie and say you wouldn't.

As for the comment on LEGIT services, the referral link from my post was "LEGIT" by all meanings of the word. I'm not looking to start a fight, I was simply posting my thoughts.

Concerining the "spam". What do you concider posting a one sentance story in the genernal discussion board? I would call it spamming by most forums definitions.

I see that the people at FWS aren't as friendly has they're put out to be, talk about false advertising.

Referral links are not permitted as per the rules of this forum and many forums.

Pfft, get out. That's all you have to do - Meksilon I can put up with, at least he's capable of following rules.

You, however, can't follow rules. Every 'free' offer (ipods, psps, whatever) isn't actually free, you're selling your personal details for a material possession.

Whether or not your link was 'LEGIT', the fact you're posting it goes against the rules of the forums.

Those one-line story threads aren't spam, not at all. Spam is considered material indiscrimately sent to individuals, mailing lists, newsgroups and forums. People who start these threads intend to spark conversation and action within the board, not direct them to external sites that intend on taking your personal information.

Yeah, you're probably right about us not being very nice, but that's your fault, for doing something stupid. I don't see where it was advertised that we're friendly though.

If you don't want to start a fight, leave your rants for your blog and disable comments.

My question is why?Because it's against the forum rules. If you don't like the rules, or you don't agree with them then I suggest you complain to the administration. If you're unhappy with their response then I suggest you leave the forum. Publicly whining about it, as you can see, will not help you.

Referral links are not permitted. I don't see why this is an issue. We have a lot of problems with people who post referral links in every thread (ie. spam) and leave the forums. Referral links to "free IPODS" or "free Razr V3".

Referral links cause spam. Therefore, we do not allow them at all. Laws exist because too many people didn't use common sense. Our rule of no referral links exist because too many people took advantage of the opporunity to be able to share a link that can benefit them and others by spamming. Not all referral links are legit, some are just scams.

If you don't feel we are friendly, well I'm sorry you feel that way. Nobody is forcing you to post here.

Yes, what you must realize is this forum is privately owned, you have only 1 right here, and that is the right to choose whether to post or not. And if you choose to post, you must post within the rules, else, you will be removed/warned. If you don't like, invoke your only right, and leave.

You can question the rules if you want, but once it has been explained to you, don't argue about it, the rules are there, they will not be changed, so either put up, or shut up.

Well, you can't say the rules can't be changed.
Because rules have and will be changed here.

Corazu

Perhaps I should edit it, they can be changed, but they won't be changed without very good reason...

But I think I'd rather people scroll down :P

The rules you can say reflect the values of the online community, and what's important to the moderators. They can be altered, changed, etc over time, but one way or another they are in place to serve a purpose. Referral links are usually to pyramid schemes.
