Just in case any of you plan on starting a free service and think you're gonna make a killing off banner ads...think again. We used to have a 2% clickthru rate. I just ran a report for the past 30 days on our outsourced banner space, and here's the results. For us, it's just extra revenue because WorldzonePro and our AdFree option on the free hosting covers all costs quite well......but if your making plans based off ad revenue, you might want to find something else to make money with..

This is your reason as to why so many free services are having to close their doors. If you cant make money off banners, you cant offer a free service unless you have other things going on to pay the bills like we do. It's too bad people arent clicking, I have seen a lot of good resources close doors simply because of the lack of clickers :(

We can...but as you can see, clickthru rates suck. I would venture to guess that also has to do with the quality of the banners also. I've seen come pretty boring banners coming thru from CJ and the others. I also noticed today that the only thing that's actually in rotation is the EzRefer (or is that EzReefer?..LOL). Anyway, anything pertaining to that has to goto Alycia@worldzone.net , actually Allen is over that part, but Alycia can review and pass it on to the proper people.
Dont ask me prices, cpm, cpc, all that stuff, etc. I dont know what they are..LOL..
Uh, EH, that's not advertising, I just gave everyone some stats that I really shouldnt have, so as to show how the ad industry is going..

It's the real life, banner aren't working. Free stuff providers just need to find alternative ways!

The reason for the boring banners is because it lowers the amount of click throughs and it raises the productivity of the traffic that does click.
Advertisers should want adverts that have a lot of english in them and aren't too flashy because it draws in people who can read english. A person who can't read english can't fill out an order form to buy something on most sites if they can't read english.
I think we are going to see hosts using more text link advertising or more pop ups as the value of traffic goes down.
I think what we have learned is that getting any and all type of traffic isn't the way to advertise. Instead, highly targeted advertising with key words in it so you only get the surfers that you are targeting.
The bottom line is that you are out to make money, not inflate your hit counter. That is the part that most people don't understand.

On my own ads (on Eisnet, a free banner exchange service) I get a click-through rate of 1.5%. The average c/t rate according to Eisnet is 1.3%.
Of cause, these ads are free, so people try to make them as attractive as possible. On the other hand, most (at least mine) are probably not made by professional advertisers.
