Great, do you have MySQL?

webgod2001
July 8th, 2001, 07:50
Unfortunately, although we have full support for MySQL we must make a surcharge of £20.00 / $29.95 per annum, however, we will also remove the ads from your page should you choose to upgrade, so you will make a saving on the $14.95 ad-free payment!

July 8th, 2001, 07:54
Can you somehow make the ad user-placable?

[ADD]
Wait... I see no FTP support mentioned.

webgod2001
July 8th, 2001, 08:22
Lex,

I was actually writing the ad-code as you replied!

Ive made it so that the file manager automatically inserts a javascript into the <HEAD> section of each page you upload.

Then, somewhere on your page you must add the call to the javascript in order to place the banner at that point.

Im leaving this to you - we aren't going to be another geocities, we're a free web host for adults and serious webmasters!

However, please place an ad on every page above the "fold" (unless you're using frames, in which case its at your discresion - either just the one ad in its own frame or one ad on every main "content" page...

As for FTP, due to the ad restrictions, you will get an FTP account free with the Ad-Free or mySQL upgrade..

It sounds very good but can you use chomad on the file manager?

webgod2001
July 8th, 2001, 08:55
Unfortunately not without an FTP account.

Free users are however quite welcome to e-mail us and we will be happy to do any CHMODding or script setting up from our end, this should take less than 48hrs but usually be the same day.

can't you just hack the hosting script you're using so that it can do that for you? just a couple of lines, if anything

But...DO place the banner codes, we will be checking..!

or if you are up to it, you can force the banner code like the way NorthSky does it :D

webgod2001
July 8th, 2001, 16:11
Because this is a free web host designed for web design professionals and not little kiddies Dragon Ball Z sites, I feel that it would be pretty bad to force banners.

Im leaving it to the discresion of the webmasters to place the banners, however, the following rules will be enforced:

*You MUST place the banner code on your pages
*On normal paged sites the banner MUST be "above the fold"
*On sites using frames, one banner must be visible at all times, but this can be in its own frame OR in the main "content" frame.

As I said, we WILL be checking, but I feel that this small amount of freedom will not be abused by the target audience. If it is, it only takes a click of a button to disable accounts..!!

But hey, NorthSky charges $4.99 a MONTH to get banners off! I feel that my bannerless deal is a lot better than that ;)

Do you offer any paid plans that include more space?
Otherwise it looks like your service has a lot of potential, how many people are going to be running it out of curiousity?

webgod2001
July 8th, 2001, 16:36
Hey Gian,

Paid plans are planned for the future yes, but I first wish to ascertain how much demand there will be.

There will be two of us running the company, however, we will be looking for volunteers to be mods on the chat rooms, support rooms, livehelper systems and forums. Post here if you are interested.

A three letter domain? Do you have one registered yet? Cause if you don't, good luck finding one!

webgod2001
July 8th, 2001, 18:10
Yes, the domains are registered.

3 letter .net domains aren't that rare, you just gotta try a few combinations!

However, ive found a very funky 4 letter .net domain that im using also..

I'm available for forums mod!

July 9th, 2001, 16:26
Hi Gyrbo, thanks for your offer! Anyone else is quite welcome to apply to be a mod :)

Ive registered the domain but it isnt up and running just yet, its http://vwww.net

This means that your addresses will be vwww.net/~you, or, if you prefer, you.vwww.net!

Just out of interest, would anyone pay for the bannerless option? What if I did a "more space" option? What do you reckon?!

Regards,

WorldWarGeneral
July 9th, 2001, 16:43
I'd be glad to be a forum mod! :)

I think more people would pay for the bannerless option if the space upgrade was included. (or is that what you had in mind in the first place?)

webgod2001
July 9th, 2001, 17:02
Hey WorldWarGeneral, thanks for your interest!

If anyone who is interested in moderating could send me their name, email and any websites they own to:

chatmod@sbdesign.co.uk OR forummod@sbdesign.co.uk (or both, whichever is applicable)

Then I will let you know when the site is up and running!

As for the more space option, it will also make your site bannerless.

How about 50Mb for £29.95 / $40 a year? Just a thought, might be a bad one, again, let me know..!!

Giancarlo
July 9th, 2001, 18:42
That seems good... you might want to make bigger plans at higher prices too.

Hias all,

Gian - thanks for the continued support. Im thinking of bigger plans, im also thinking of boosting the free membership to 15mb instead of 10.

Cowax - Well whadaya know? 4 letters! Lol, actually ive got some nice three letter domains in mind but im registering them at a later date, dont wanna max out my bank account now do i..!

Everyone - 50Mb for £29.95 / $40 a year, who would sign up? What if there was a FREE MySQL database for the first three signups? (a saving on the £20.00 / $29.95 per annum MySQL setup fee..!)

The site isn't up yet. He is still trying to figure out a good busness tactic.
Also webgod2001, your plan sounds good. You have verry good prices (I hang out in the paid forum too). I hope you can keep it up for some time.

webgod2001
July 10th, 2001, 09:09
Andy,

Gyrbo is right, im still working on the site ;) When it is available it will be at http://vwww.net

By the way, all users now get 15Mb of webspace as standard as opposed to the original 10Mb. Ive also confirmed that the first three people to sign up for the mega package (50Mb and no ads) will get a free MySQL database.

Stay tuned, ask questions, and i'll keep ya all posted..!

P.S. Thanks to all who signed up to be forum mods, I will reply in due course with info. Im still in need of chat moderators, as long as you have good english country doesnt matter, and the more outlandish the better; different time zones = a good range of availability! Chat mod wannabies please write to chatmods@sbdesign.co.uk

I don't want to sound bad, but I wouldn't pay $40 or even $20 to a startup host. Free hosts open and close every day.

Before I pay I want to be sure that I am going to get what I pay for. You have no "history" and no "big name" to gurantee that your host will still be alive 5 months from now.

Before lots of people trust you and pay you for your services you have to create a good name, and this will take lots of work and time.

Giancarlo

Webgod: What are you running off? A dedicated server or reseller?

webgod2001
July 10th, 2001, 10:25
Gian - The sites will be running off a Raq4i from RackShack.

Ozy - If you threw money at a new host, you would be mad. If you read reviews of a new host and threw money at it, you'd be optimistic. If you signed up for the free service for a couple of weeks and THEN upgraded to paid hosting, you would be going on your own opinion.

What im saying is dont take my word for it, sign up when the site opens, i promise you that you wont be disappointed.

P.S. Im not going to close in 5 months, paid customers will have made an investment in the company, the money will be used to strenghten, reinforce and improve the service, it wont be used for my next vacation..! :)

gyrbo
July 10th, 2001, 10:30
So you in fact say that you will close in 5 months? And you want people to sign up and pay yearly? Not a good moce to my guess.

lol gyrbo...

"In about 5 months, I am going to close shop... just after I get enough paid customers to take a holiday to Jamaca. THE MONEY WILL NOT BE USED TO STRENGTHEN THE COMPANY.. instead, I will let it fall to pieces.

So, this is how it works, you pay me for a year's hosting, after I earn enough money for a holiday (according to my calculations, around 5mths) I'll shutdown the servers and you will all be left deserted and ripped off. I am just notifying you all, my loyal customers to protect me from a major lawsuit.

So visit vwww.net today and send me to Jamaca!!! wheeee"

Hey again all,

Im getting the servers configed tonight and the website is also in design.

Payment will more than likely be with PayPal unless anyone else can suggest a decent service which accepts UK members..!

We can host domains, no problem, the nameservers will be posted on the site, then just let us know via email or in the chat room and we'll link them to your account!

webgod2001
July 11th, 2001, 05:35
Hi all, Just an update!

The domains are up and running, you will automatically recieve a folder based url (http://vwww.net/~you) and you will also soon be able to apply for a subdomain.

The web design stage is complete, the servers should be up by tonight, the site should be up by tomorrow, everything is going well! I will be contacting the forum and chat moderators soon, please do feel free to volunteer to be a moderator by e-mailing mods@sbdesign.co.uk

Giancarlo

apickett75
July 13th, 2001, 11:56
would users trust a $4 - $5 plan?

Giancarlo
July 13th, 2001, 11:58

apickett75
July 13th, 2001, 12:01

Giancarlo

webgod2001
July 13th, 2001, 12:20
Apickett - im hoping to make some money! Sure im doing this for the love of hosting :D but it would be cool to make a little money to improve the service etc..!

If anyone is scared about signing up for the paid services (and I assure you there is no need), sign up for the free package for a week, see how it goes, you can always e-mail admin@vwww.net to upgrade and in a weeks time you will see a little "upgrade your account" link appear on the homepage!

Thanks for all the signups so far guys, please dont just sign up for the hell of it, and if you already have done, e-mail me please to let me know; sure you can play around for a while but dont just leave 'dead' accounts!

If anyone else has questions im in the VWWW.NET chat room right now, find it at http://vwww.net/techsupp.htm

Hey, this sounds really nice. Do you support the following on the free account?

SSI
.htaccess (not only PW prot.)
any file types (zip, exe...)
any file size (within the limit of the account)

Good luck. :)

webgod2001
July 13th, 2001, 13:17
Travis - the terms say that 70% of your pages must have the banner, and one of these must be the index page. For example, if you have 10 pages on your site, place the banner on your index page and 6 others.

Hey Meow, thanks for your question.

Do you support the following on the free account?

SSI

Yes.

.htaccess (not only PW prot.)

Yes.

any file types (zip, exe...)

Yes, but no viruses and illegal stuff (obviously!)

any file size (within the limit of the account)

Yes.

Any more questions, let me know!

£10 / $14.95 per 2 years for .co.uk .org.uk

I thought you could only put under 200 people on a cobalt server (http://www.vwww.net/404_ERROR)?

webgod2001
July 13th, 2001, 16:56
*Semi* correct - You can split a RaQ up into roughly 200 virtual servers, and then you can split each virtual server up in to a maximum of 200 accounts.

We currently have 8 users, and funding. Some people have also bought paid packages, the money from which will be stored in a high interest bank account in case the need to purchase a second server should ever arise!

gyrbo
July 13th, 2001, 17:03

Yes there is. It's not a physical limit though. You can create as many accounts as possible but it will just over load the server. The recommended limit it 150-200 when you have scripting enabled and around 250-300 when you do very little scripting and more of static html pages.
