Well, redrival is down, no member pages, no redrival.com for now

Since i know matt comes here, what happened? I have a few friends that have that services and they want to know what's up too

And what does everyone think of them?

I think that if they had cgi that would make me join, since i gotta have my cgi, banners or no banners :D

Plus this is the first time that i know of that they had downtime

They've had plenty of down-time in the past (maybe I've just been around longer than you though ;)). Entire server has been nuked several times that I know of. Server down for extended periods of time in the past. They've shut off signups many times for whatever ridiculous reason they can come up with. What anyone sees in them (besides the no ads part) is beyond me. Personally, I'd stay away from a host that doesn't make any money. Sooner or later they won't be able to afford it and then what?

and then they shut down or put up any combination of ads to make up for all the weeks they've missed out on. Maybe they have a moment of significant realization that one cant operate a business on a non existant or small profit and offer a service for very long.

People who like RedRival like it because there are no ads, because Matt is as honest as he can be with his members, and because he maintains his equilibrium in the face of whatever problems come along, and tries to do what he can to provide fixes and solutions for individual members when needed. Also, it doesn't have access to CGI but it does to SSI, which is a really nice feature.

I don't think I'd use a FWP for a site that really, really needs to be up all the time, but despite problems I like RedRival. I have a few sites on free web space and have liked RedRival and F2S the best.

When it comes down to it if your site is important and popular you wouldn't host it on a FWP unless it has a proven track record. Even then there's no guarantee that there will be no downtime. Redrival is one of two of my favourite FWPs only because it has a community atmosphere and the other is Tripod which I use because it's fast and downtimes are rare.

Although, the excuses are growing at Redrival which is very suspicious.

Greetings,

Ron: Looks like you have me on this one. :) The Updates at RedRival has all the info, but basically: Had a primary hard drive failure, which we had supposedly fixed quickly after the first problem, and we thought everything was fine., but then we took a hard nose dive. Everything was fixed up and a new drive installed quickly, but, inexplicably as of yet, networking errors were popping up all over the place. As it turned out, important networking files had been corrupted from the first failure, so we needed to reinstall the entire system. Needless to say, this weekend was one I very much want to forget.

The timing of this failure was probably the worst, as it's just before the upgrades that would've actually prevented this situation.

Farewell,
