I was just wondering after reading the thread entitled "longest thread" where Epgs and Koolguy talk about threads being archived from the starting of the new vBulletin. How big is the actualy MySQL database of posts for this board. It would be very interesting to find out!

Personally I would guess around 100kb for that one thread.

Disk space costs almost nothing [IBM recently invented 3 layers magnetic media, one ruthenium layer is 3 atom length!, so to 2003 year the density of writing will be ~ 100Gb/square inch]
The traffic is the most expensive. But its values are probably a commercial secret.

I guess it wont take more then 100MB at max. It's pure text. NO layout, no nothing. In 1 MB you can get 1048576 characters. Counting on an average of 500 chars/post you could get 209715 posts in 100MB. It would only take around 30MB if you do some calculation.

I bet it is around 30-75 mb. I think this because a blank vBulletin is only 1.2 MB (vBulletin customizations during installation process).

The 20TB was a joke if you didn't know...
Anyway, you have to include the member profiles and private messages and stuff like that. Therefore, i'm guessing about 60-75megs.

I know it was a joke. I was also wondering if anyone knew how much a 20TB hd is!

What is the average seek time on a 20 TB hard drive? :D
Actually for those interested this is the hard drive FreeWebspace runs off of: http://www.zdnet.com/products/stories/reviews/0,4161,2635555,00.html
I'll leave you guys to guess how large the database is to see who is closest. :) If you guess the exact file size Kilobyte's then you win $5 from me. If someone actually guesses it they are responsible for shipping and handling and I may ship it in pennies. :D

i've recommended a lot of people, recently, to go to the webhostingtalk forums where they hold specials ( http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ ), including ones on dedicated servers. try burstnet?

If you guess the exact file size Kilobyte's Won't that get bigger whenever someone posts? Or are you talking about how much space is alotted for the DB?

That was my point. :) Your odds are probably worse then the lottery, as you don't know when I'll check the file size to verify it and it'd more or less be a shot in the dark anyway.
