I've recently bought a domain name, but wanted to point it at some free webspace rather than shell out another 40 odd quid for 5 meg.

Most of the free providers i have tried force their URL into the address bar, and i'm looking for one that will allow me to display my '.com' address over the top.

There's a company called Portland that do it, but i can't access their site anymore ..

Does anyone know anywhere else ??

Cheers ..:D

you mean pointing via DNS?

http://www.freewebspace.net/php/search.php?a=1&b=0&form_language=&form_location=&form_space=0&form_adType=&form_features%5B%5D=Domain&form_title=&form_hostType=REG&i=10&submit=Search ;)

no .. what i mean is this ..

i signed up for a page at 50megs.com and got the url

http://www.mysitename.50megs.com

I went to the control panel for my .com name and pointed it at that URL so that when i typed into the address bar

http://www.mysitename.com

then it would display the site hosted at 50megs.com - BUT in the address bar it would still display

http://www.mysitename.com

however, when i enter my .com name into the address bar, it finds the site at 50megs.com with no problems, but it displays the URL as

http://www.mysitename.50megs.com

and NOT

http://www.mysitename.com

Hope that made sense :)

i think i understand what you mean...
in my opinion you should ask for that where you bought the domain name...

I know what you mean. I bet the problem is either your domain that you registered(which does not allow cloaking), or your 50megs server(which does not allow cloaking).

I'm not sure which one it is, but it is most likely one of the two. I'd say it's quite possibly 50megs.

I would just try to get a new free server.

Your domain provider should have an URL cloaking option. Mine does.

it would be a lot better if you pointed the domain DIRECTLY to your host, rather than through URL redirection because it will cut down on load times. that's why i suggested the free hosts with domainhosting.
