View Full Version : Domain Name Appraisal: Two Character Country Code

I am thinking about starting a free domain name service similar to http://www.freedomain.co.nr, and I have found a good two character country code domain that is still available to be registered. It is in the below format.
co.{country code}
For example, it is something like:
co.uk
I am not going to mention the actual domain name so that no one else registers it.
Do you think it would be worth starting a free service like this? It will have similar features to that of uni.cc, it will have DNS management and nameserver modification along with URL redirection. Do you think a domain name like this is worth anything?
Thanks! :-)

If you can offer the features that uni.cc offers (DNS Management especially) then I can see the domains going like hot cakes.

Yes, that's what I thought. It will also be shorter than uni.cc, users will get domain names in the following format.
{theirname}.co.{country code}

I think it could be big, but how are you going to add DNS management? it is not that easy to add it.

It shouldn't be too hard to add. I am currently testing, and it seems to be going good... It will obviously be a long time though until the whole thing is finished. :biggrin2:

jUST THINK HOW MANY PEOPLE POST PER DAY ASKING FOR FREE DOMAIN IN THE DOMAINS FORUM!! tHEY WOULDN'T NEED TO NOW, COZ THEY COULD GET A FREE SHORT URL WITH DNS!
aLSO, YOU COULD HAVE RESELLER ACCOUNTS FOR HOSTS THAT WANT TO GIVE THERE USERS A SHORT URL, OR FOR THOSES THAT DON'T GIVE A SUBDOMAIN.

It will use a custom PHP script, which I will write. I will setup a VPS with cPanel DNS Only installed and use PHP to integrate with it to modify the DNS zones. :-) If it gets really big, then I would setup a dedicated server just for serving the DNS.

I wasn't going to place ads on the actual domains, I was going to place Google ads on the main website where you register the domains and on the forums. I am currently working on a PHP class to interface with Bind.

Neg x3, people wont sign up if there are ads on their page(s). Thats why these things, such as co.nr are popular, cause its sounds like a domain, and there are no ads or what-not.
Static. Can't wait for the release. Will tell all my friends if I like it =p

You could also have a donations button etc. And if I were a free user with paypal. I know I would donate. Which in the eventual case I might choose to use one of your domains. Or refer them to your site. And to help keep your site alive Id give donations etc. ^_^. I wanted to eventually start a service like this but I got too many other things going lol. Good luck.

Static, I would be willing to offer a free dedicated windows server for this service. Tell me if you're interested.

Interesting... thanks for the offer, but it will need to run on a linux server because it will use BIND.
I will probably run it on a VPS to start with and then move it to a dedicated server when it gets popular. :-)

Ok. Well-the offer is still open fort ya... I can always reformat and install linux. I also own a couple servers myself, so I know alot about operating them-aswell as php and mysql. I would still LOVE to help out with this project in some way...lol. If I can't I'll probably have to make my own to tide myself over.
Good luck, and be sure to pm me if you neeed any assistance.

would we get google.co... , yahoo.co... and other big domains?? may be you could generate money by registering those urself sell them to the respective companies at high prices and recover your costs! , :wink2: and also stop some spams like ebay.co... and paypal.co...

Nice idea... I am not sure if those companies would be interested though. :biggrin2:

You have to be careful with that though. Some companies will instead try to sue you claiming extortion, etc. Too many people have tried to profit that way.

That's true... I would probably just add them to a reserved list so that no one could register them. :-)

Just out of curiosity, how do you register your own .co.whatever domain extention? I've been wanting to do it for ages ;) .

You just need to go to a domain registrar that registers country code domains and run a search for "co" and register it like a normal domain. :biggrin2:
