Giancarlo
July 13th, 2001, 11:41
I don't see anything wrong with having it in Bejing.

I am from Toronto too
Giancarlo
July 13th, 2001, 11:47
Well looks like it will be at Bejing... they had quite a celebration.. and it looked like the PLA was marching throughout Bejing and Jiang Zemin, the Leader, would attend the celebrations.
Oh I retract that statement... everyone in Toronto is mad at the Chinese for stealing their chance at the 2008 Olympics. :D

No.. I don't think he was being racist. He just wanted to have the Olympics there. In fact, there are huge chinese/asian communities in Toronto.
I am from Toronto as well, but I am not surprised that we lost the bid.

I finally realized that he was just mad at China.... I could see why...
But China with its human rights problems, and a massacre that occured a mere 12-13 years ago got voted to stage the 2008 Olympics... hmmm...

A while ago I heard on the news that NYC was planning on building some kind of arena or whatever in hope that the Olympics would be held there in 2012. I probably wrong somewhere in there. Can someone correct me?

China had to win. The market is huge and it's untapped. It's virtually billions and billions of dollars waiting to be grabbed by Multi National Companies.
The olympics these days have become a symbol of commercialism rather a symbol of sport. Every country wants to hold the olympics because it involves so much profit and the local economy literaly booms and profits sky rocket.
Everything is decided by sponsorships these days.

The Olympics suck.
They are disgustingly overrated.
Giancarlo
July 13th, 2001, 12:46
I must overwhelmingly agree, they do suck. Money is everything.

July 13th, 2001, 13:37
Well i think china deserved to win, America has had its issue with china, and i think the global body of the Olympics was just trying to show that the U.S cannot control everything that has to do with China.

Also i definetly prefer the worldcup to olympics, go France! :D

i am glad toronto didn't get it because tax payers would of had to pay the 20 billion dollar bill. and for what? some publicity? some tourist dollars? i don't think china should have got it either because of the way the treat ppl there but oh well. maybe it will wake up more ppl to what is really happening over there. Also i believe the leader of the IOC was from China, so thats kind of like nepitism.

Speaking as a Torontonian ( a dude from Toronto ), Im very excited to see that toronto has a great chance of winning. Its one of the most culturealy diverse cities in the world and deserves a lot more credit that it gets. As far as having the olympics in China, eek. The main reason most people feel that it wont win ( and i truely hope for the IOC's case) is because of a lack of human compasion. The Chinese govenrnment kills people simply for there beliefs, which is completly wrong. I have been following a lot of the issues happening in China and its all very sad to see. I especially feel for the people of Tibet, that were kicked out of there country and taken over by the Chinese Gov. The people of Tibet are now living in India, fearing for there lives. And surely if they stayed they would have all been killed, including the Dali Lama himself. I do not have a problem again chinese people, nor any other race. I just don't think China should even be considered as a candidate. If the Chinese government has the dough to shell out for the olympics, maybe it should instead return that money to the people that are fleeing on boats and whatnot for a better life elsewhere?

From 1948 - 1970s, Mao Zedong ran a state runned famine where twenty million people perished. In 1989, leader Deng Xiaoping launched a military offensive against democratic protesters, killing tens of thousands. Last month, 1,800 People were executed by Chinese Army and Police for Minor Charges, additional thousands were executed for more serious charges.
Nice Record.

I cant believe they even got this far, but they won.. i cant get over that. There is going to be a lot of fuss about this. It actually makes me sick to think about it. Im glad toronto didnt win, maybe now Mell Lastman can focus on the homeless, and the people that house them. Not to mention lower housing costs, damn. Im in australia where everything is expensive, yet housing is like half of what it costs in toronto.. CHINA WON! What is wrong with this world!?

JUST IMAGINE: 20+ Million People Lost During the Chinese Communist Cultural Revolution that lasted from 1949 (Collapse of Nationalists) - the late 1970s. THEY EXECUTED DEMOCRATIC PROTESTERS. I got nothing against the Chinese People, and they are supposed to be real friendly towards foreigners.

Well Toronto did come in second with 22 votes. Benging had 53, I think. Vancouver is hoping for the 2010 Winter olympics. I hope they get it; They have great facilities.

That's too bad. If Toronto would have gotten the bid maybe they would have built the BlueJays a new stadium (like they did with Turner Field in Atlanta '96). They need a new stadium. Big ugly domes suck.

Gayo, why do you want the symbol of a country that was responsible for 20+ Million Deaths from 1949-late 1970s?

So what? It was both the Symbol for China and the USSR, both countries responsible for killing 20 million of their own people. That is Communism for you!

Not to drag this topic off subject even more, but i would like to mention that the USSR no longer exists.

I back the freedom of choice. To follow it, several Olympics should be. At first the sportsmen choose where they like to play, then spectators. Those who choose Toronto buy Toronto’s tickets…and so on.
Where there is something one, monopoly, all the ---- surfaces.

You I know that silly, it was divided up in many republics that found the loosely developed alliance called the CIS. The Symbol is as offensive as the Swasitka.

I can understand that that symbol would offend you as much as the swastika
I changed it. Hopefully it isn't so bad anymore

OHH YEAH! IOSIF Dzhugashvili (Joseph Stalin)! Much better... did I mention he killed more of his own people than Hitler did of Jews and Allied Soliders? The Numbers are up to twenty millions.

His full name was Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili, he was responsible for great purges, killing most of his party members and citizens, so 20 million people died as a result. He had horrible paranoia, and is nothing to praise about.
