View Full Version : Trouble finding a host

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a host, quite simply, that can deliver the following:

10-15 MB space
Unrestricted bandwidth (i.e. like 10 GB+)
FTP
CGI/Perl
PHP/MySQL

The reason for the high bandwidth is because it would be used to host a CGI/HTML chatroom. I know it's possibly the least efficient thing around, but it's a nostalgia thing. I plan on rehosting the first chatroom I ever frequented about 9 years ago, and it has a very particular format. I don't expect the usage to be tremendously high, but you never know.

I've been searching for something like this for a good long time, as you can probably imagine. But if anyone knows of any hosts that could handle it, I'd be very grateful if you could reply.

Thanks in advance!

Good luck. Most hosts aren't going to allow Perl based chat systems
and that's one area that usually comes with a lot of restrictions
especially when talking about free hosting.

We allow a few chat programs at Clubhost but those are all PHP based
and are mostly forum shoutbox type of applications.

I know it... because it drains the resources so much. It's always been a problem, and I've had sites shut down before because of it (I'd always checked the Terms & Conditions, and they hadn't explicitly stated it couldn't be done... it was always the 'at our discretion' clause.)

So I guess, as a contingency, is anyone aware of any customizable free php/sql based chat scripts? Or maybe flash/sql? Those seem to be almost as hard to find. I'd prefer to avoid using a java applet if possible.

Thanks for your help amz & compass... all replies are appreciated :-)
