I am intrested in finding movie reviews from newsgroups to use on my website. I know very little about newsgroups and have rarely used them.

My main question is:

Where will old posts go? When I look at newsgroup that interests me(rec.arts.movies.reviews ), I will get messages written between 7th of July and 11 of July. Where are older posts? Are they stored anywhere? Or I just don't know how to use my Outlook to download all messages?

There are places like etin.com which will serve newsgroup messages. Are there places where older posts are held?

News groups servers ususally store upto 3 year old posts. But it depens on the server. My guess is that somewhere in outlook express you can change an option to see more posts.

Don't ask me where because I think outlook express sucks with so many security holes.

http://groups.google.com/googlegroups/deja_announcement.html – try it. Goodle has bought the Deja’s news groups archive. But it’s accessible only via Web interface.

thanx, red_zinc!:)
Google newsgroups are fine. Although they don't display more messages than 1000 per search it is possible to get the older ones by changing the dates between what to search.

The date thing is a setting in your newsgroup browser.

I would suggest getting an account at www.mailandnews.com . It works a little better than deja.

The ultimate solution, however, would be to download "agent", a newgroup browsing program, and find yourself a free news server, such as news.rapidnet.net. If it all seems a little complicated to you, PM me, or i can explain it here.

Why are agents better and where can I find one?

http://www.forteinc.com/agent/freagent.htm

That is probably your best bet for newsreading software.

Just wondering, how much are newgroups actually used nowadays?

It depends. Many are just spam, but it is a major venue for trading Mp3s. Actually there are quite a few users, and so many newsgroups. It is actually slowing down (speed wise) because the majority of people in the alt.binary.* or any group with large files use auto posters, and also because many more large files are available,a and many people download them.

They seem to be better resource for me as services like subPortal and other content providers.

I agree. I have been using Usenet for several years now. A major drawback is all the spam

most servers only keep a month or two (at most) of posts.

I use Outlook Express 6 to goto newsgroups, and I have it set to only download 300 message headers at a time... that might be your problem, depending on how active your group is... just hit the button "Headers" a few times, to get some more messages..

I frequent the groups alt.www.webmaster , alt.freewebhosting (it stinks), rec.photo.digital, and comp.graphics.apps.paint-shop-pro ...

they all are pretty busy... but alt.freewebhosting is mostly junk.

my newserver has a spam filter, so I rarely see spam. :)

Is your server a pay one or a free one? I am using a free one, and its main drawback is that some posts never show up, or show up a few days after they were posted.

it's free, but you have to sign up, then they'll manually make the account.

http://news.cis.dfn.de

has posting access, and fast, too. but no binaries.

I think news://news.clara.net or news://news.ripco.net may have binaries... (those may not be the correct domains)
