Windows XP Pro. Stable OS. As long as you have take the time to make sure it's patched and run AV and keep it clean, you should have no problems.

Alrite...I am gonna get a lot of bad replies or rep or something about this one...but although I dont own one becasue I am a student and can't quite afford to buy one...Apple OS X is probably the best...I am sorry I know this is a very Windows Pro forum but I am a firm Apple Believer...Sry. But seriously how many of you would have to say if Windows XP was as good as Apple it would be heaven on earth...really come on?

Windows is nice because it is user friendly. I myself run Windows XP Pro on one computer but on the other I run Gentoo Linux. It all depends on what you are acustomed to.

I personally use XP on this machine. I have used Linux plenty in the past but have always migrated slowly back to Windows. I plan on trying a mini Mac soon.

Is anyone besides I still afraid of SP2? I know all new computers all have it, but I still refuse to upgrade this machine. Last time I did, it messed some stuff up in Windows and I had to reformat. I ran into a lot of software issues. Are those still around or is it worth me upgrading?

My new laptop came with it, but I upgraded my old desktop and had no problems whatsoever. And it's only a 566 mhz with 256 MB of RAM.

When Sp2 was released, I spent about a month or two repairing computers that were corrupted by Sp2. Which convinced me not to upgrade to SP2. But I've had Sp2 now for about 6 months and have no problems what so ever.

i tend to find it always a good idea to wait around 2/3 months before using any new SP that way they will sort the errors and stuff and then it normaly ok

I may upgrade tonight then, I suppose it may be worth it. Robert, I too, ended up fixing many a machine when SP2 showed up. I dont know how many customersI had that ran into problems, but it was QUITE a few! I had to do the same to my own. Made me think I didnt want it. I may give it a shot though..

Yea it was pretty bad. A lot of them were in the process of upgrading Sp2 when their system would freeze and then wouldn't load up properly. It was a PITA

That's what I usually do. I'll probably wait a while after Vista comes out before I upgrade. Let everyone else "beta test" it. :wink2:

I think I'll wait to see if their is any OS-DRM built into Vista before I buy it...I refuse to buy into something that will keep me from ripping and burning my own CDs.

Mepis (http://www.mepis.org/) has been by far my favorite so far for its simplicity, ease of configuration and power. Windows XP is functional and obviously has advantages for gamers. Fedora and Mandrake I had a few issues with. Ubuntu is fine but but you have to install and configure quite a lot yoruself that it doesn't come with. OS X looks pretty from a distance but I've never used it.
There is, anyhow, no single best OS for everyone. Different people have different needs, and different OSes are better at addressing them. I use Linux largely because the software I tend to need is easier to find and install there (apt repositories often seem boundless), whereas many people use Windows because the software they need is there.

Aside from Windows XP, I use yoper on my other computer. Yoper works fine with all my hardware, including OpenGL acceleration.
