I'm ok with my current provider, but I'm having thoughts of switching. If anyone could provide these specs at a reasonable price, I think I'll switch:

At least 128mb RAM guaranteed, burstable to whatever
Equal share CPU
centOS
Direct Admin (installatron is a plus but not needed)
At least 5gb space
At least 50gb bandwidth

Thanks! And don't tell me to go to a2b2, I'm with VPS Colo right now so they won't accept me.

Managed (Support) or Unmanaged (No Support)?

Why the need to switch. From personal experience people if you have found a new host and they are ok, stick with them. Usually what will happen to people who move is they get problems, then you will wish you stayed with your previous host.

Just my personal opinion.

Well, I'm the type of person who wants every penny of his money put into good use. I want to feel that my host is excellent...also, the VPS is getting a bit too expensive and VPS Colo doesn't have the specs I want listed above. :P I'd like the VPS to be managed for now.

Any specific price range?

klarth
September 3rd, 2005, 15:49
Yeah, under 50 dollars. Anything in the 30-40 range would be perfect though.

www.a2b2.com is the best for a VPS.

Is CentOS a must?

klarth
September 3rd, 2005, 18:24
centOS is a want...it's not a must I guess.

It looks like you have some good offers, but I do not now if you would like another. Why are you going for a VPS? Because it is cheaper than a dedicated server? I do not know if this applies to you, but we recommend that you start small with your bandwidth. We had a client that moved from The Planet to our servers and could not believe the bandwidth change. He told us that he didn't understand why he was using more bandwidth with The Planet and not with us. This is contributed to the dedicated rather than shared enviroment. Below is a dedicated server:

Intel® Xeon™ processor, 3.0GHz, 2MB Cache, 800MHz FSB
256MB, DDR2, 400MHz, 1X256, Single Ranked DIMMs
6GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
20 DGB of Data Transfer ( 64kbps burstable to 10MB)
1 usable IP address
Redhat Fedora
Webmin
$29/month

It might be wise to visit our web site and customize your own server. Http://webmediaspecialties.com. Please contact us at sales@webmediaspecialties.com if you have any questions.

Are my eyes lying to me? I'm not quite sure what you're offering...what I got from this is: You're offering a full dedicated server with root access running Intel Xeon Processors for 30 a month?

Yellowmc
September 3rd, 2005, 22:11
Yeah, but webmin isnt a very good control panel, you might want to get the addon to the server for another control panel.

I'm confused as to how he can afford it. I went to the site and saw it's unmanaged though. The turn off is that he doesn't have Direct Admin...I'm accepting more offers please, but I'd like the price range around 30-40. Thanks!

We buy servers use them over and over and keep upgrading rather than buying new servers. Yes, We are offering one Intel Xeon. This offer also comes with no setup fee. Cpanel is $30/month, but Webmin does do the job.

I've grown quite tired of cPanel, and webmin does look good, but I plan on hosting on this. Most people don't like the webmin/usermin interface...I guess I could install zpanel or something but I have heard of security holes and inefficiency on it. I'm considering your offer though, do you accept paypal?

How about plesk?

klarth
September 3rd, 2005, 22:24
Plesk seems ok, but I'm not sure how it compares to cPanel in performance.

WMSpecialties

Personally, I don't believe that direct admin could be in a battle with CPanel or Plesk. Plesk is inferior to CPanel, but it plesk looks nice and is has an easy GUI interface.

klarth

I'm not sure about that, they both have their perks. But Direct Admin is a personal favorite of mine...it is very fast, efficient and simple to use. It is not as big as cPanel either. :)

Klarth, If you can adjust your budget a bit, you can very well get a Dell PowerEdge P4 2.8 Ghz, 512 DDR2 ECC, 80 GB SATA with CentOS 3.4/4 at $79/Mon.

There is little difference in VPS and basic server prices and it is always advisable to get a dedicated server for the requirements that you mentioned.

Also, above server comes with 24*7*365 support and basic server management. So you can create multiple vps on it and resell further.

Think about this option before you decide to go with any.

Thankyou.
