Well, someone mentioned mektek.net in that thread I started about hobbiton.org... they seem to have a good plan, but do they support SSI? Does anyone use them?

SSI is listed as one of their standard features.

I was actually referring to this:

Unless they're the same thing...

I love mektek.net ! My site (in my sig) is now hosted there. They offer unlimited webspace but are as fast as NBCi was! I officially deem them the "new NBCi!" Did I mention that they only require the banner on your main page, and they let YOU place it where you want - the server does not automatically modify your code (although I chose to place the ad in its own frame just to be nice)!

Do they support SSI? When you sign up with a certain amount of space, can you get more when you run out?

does anybody know do they support php (with mail function), FTP upload, and external connections (freesql.org) or do i get internal mysql, if so how much space for it?

Ya, they do support PHP. MySQL was an option, but it's no longer available because no one used it. They mite specially set one up for you if you have a good enough reason for them to do that for you.

Hi Guys,

I am the person that runs MekTek and felt I should come here and explain a few things. Firstly, how did I even know about this thread? Well.. just by chance I came across it when I was browsing through our referer logs on our site (basicaly when you visit a site, 9 times out of 10, if its a big site, they will have logged where you came from)..

Anyhows, at present we recieve maybe 50-100 hosting sign-ups every day, and Im getting allot of questions from users of this nice forum. So to answer more directly to a wider audience with an interest, here's an ultra-mini FAQ about us based on questions you have asked. I will post this on other forums also purely because I dont have time to answer each and every mail I recieve, which is usualy around 200+ per day and Im just 1 member of a team at MekTek.

How much space can I have?
------------
There is no actual limit, within reason. If you are using our hosting service for things you know you shouldnt be (ie; storing warez/porn/mp3's) then you can expect to lose your account. Natural growth of a site is something we are happy with and will accomodate.

Do I get FTP Access? What scripts work?
------------
Yes FTP Access is included, and you can run any major script. CGI is usable aswell as PL files (some people have said CGI is not usable, you have to upload a .htaccess file to enable it, something we are happy to provide). PHP etc will also work, SSI, pretty much anything you can think of except ASP (because our server is linux based). Also we dont supply MySQL accounts, there are dedicated places for that, we dont feel we should put a strain on our service by giving out tons of MySQL accounts.

Need I Include Banners?
------------
Absolutely yes! This is not at all about us making huge ammounts of money from your site, to the contrary we lose money by hosting sites.. banners decrease the ammount lost. We offer this because we want to and have other sources of revenue, any site found to not have banners will be deleted within a few days, we have enough staff to check up on this so no point signing up if you intend to try and cheat out generous offer of placing the banner code for yourself instead of having it forced on you. Polls and research utterly prove that average web users dont have a care in the world for a regular banner, if you are losing visitors, its because of your content... banners are standard nowdays on the web, if you honestly believe it costs nothing to run a fast/reliable server, and that you shouldnt have to include a banner.. just try and set your own server up for nothing and see exactly how much it costs.

How Fast Is MekTek?
------------
Very fast, just check out our site, or the hosted sites. The server is based in Texas US and serves USA/Europe and much further out at blistering speed.

Im not at all trying to sell MekTek's hosting service because it actualy costs us to run this server. But as I say, I cant answer everyone at once so this seemed like a good thing to do. We arent huge, certainly not compared to Gamespy etc, but we do allways make the effort to talk to people and answer questions. I hope this helps..

Before you do sign up, I must give you one tiny bit of an infraction - their banner ads, when clicked, actually load inside of the rectangular square (it is an iframe) instead of over the whole browser window. This may or may not be a problem - I myself have decided to put a refresh command in the (self-inflicted) Mektek adframe in order to reload a new banner ad in case someone actually clicks on the ad and loads it in the small square while the rest of my site remains intact.

Well, I'd rather have ads than a sucky service (like Nightsteel or Digital-host.net).

Hi again,

Yes you can send emails through PHP scripts, we do not provide SQL Database accounts to our users though, this can be obtained by many other routes including freesql.org as you mentioned.

In reply to Cracker, that banner code is due to be changed in the near future, moving banner networks to a different provider. Obviously we will mail all sites the new info, and give ample time for the changes to be reflected throughout all the sites.

Thankyou all for showing interest in the things we offer, I enjoy talking to the people that use anything offered by MekTek. Our hosting manager is going to kill me, he's getting lots of work to do :). I very much doubt I will have time to come back and check reply's again (just wanted to pop back once) since I have so much work related stuff to do, and so few hours in a day.

Best of luck with whatever host any of you choose to use.

Regards,

Fearless MKO

These guys rock. I signed up for 100gigs (dont know why just seeing if they would accept me) they did so they obviously think they will be around for a while as do i. I dont know what i am gonna do with the space. How about i make a free web host, and allow people one gig of space, and make them put on mektek's banner. Then they would get more money and i would be happy. I myself really dont need this account for anything but i am gonna keep it.

Cracker

You signed up for 100 gigs!!? I only signed up for 500 mb (which is probably more than even my site will ever use, creates the illusion that it is unlimited - I may not even get to the 300 mb mark). Boy, does my site feel small even though it's currently up to 209 mb.

Hey needcgispace did they give you THAT much. Damb i didnt think they would go more than 100gigs. Although i guess they realise that most epople wont upload that in a day, even a week, so it will give them a bit of time before they need to get a couple of new hard drives.

Does MekTek only allow sub-domains or will they allow you to use your own domain?

Anyone know if they support FP extensions?

niv
