I would firstly like to point out that I have updated all the drivers and firmware for this drive correctly, and that the fault came before making these changes! The DVD-+RW has been operating fine until last week. I installed a two new software programs last week, these were Alcohol 120% & WinISO. Since these have been installed the drive has NOT been able to read any media other than DVDs already containing data.

The drive simply can not detect any of the following types of media, regardless of type... Blank CDs, Audio CDs, Data CDS, Blank DVDs.

However, I do not believe this is a problem just in Windows XP. If I were to insert a type of media which this drive can not read, then reboot the pc, while the drive is trying to read that CD/DVD the motherboard can not detect the IDE master and slave... suggesting to me a hardware problem???

I have looked on the internet and it seems that there are many other people having exactly the same problem where the drive just stops being able to read media that has been working for months.

Could this be a ROM or something onboard the drive ?

I do strongly believe that the drive is not broken.

Can you help?

Did you try uninstalling the suspicious software (probably winISO but uninstall both)?

Did you try to rollback driver to the time it worked? Please also state the DVDRW model so maybe someone can help if they have something similar.

Samsung (Toshiba Rebag) TS-H552B.

No offence, but this is the kinda stuff that Samsung come up with in their support desk. The drive functions exactly the same regardless of operating system, which suggests to me that drivers have nothing to do with this problem.... am I wrong ?

well you said it stopped working right after you installed those programs, which would suggest that it is indeed a software related problem (driver or otherwise). If not, than it's just a coincidence that your drive for some reason burned out at the same time as you added new writing software.

Alcohol 120% is the culprit. Bro installed on his system. Turned his D; drive into E: where the comp was always confused. His soundblaster 4.1 sound card no longer worked. Totally screwed it up. Uninstall it then you may have to reinstall the drive before everything works again.

Some of these programs don't work well with XP Service Pack 2 installed (which may also be part of the problem), especially DAEMON Tools, which will require 6 or 7 restarts if your WinXP installation is a bit buggy.
