I'll have to go with P4. I like the intel stuff. Anyway, I'm planning on buying an AMD. But then I'll have to buy a new power supply. Crappy 250W!

Actually, with the next generation STFU, you'll be able to build a server capable of unlimited bandwith and web space for under $5/year.
Oh yeah... And with a few add-ons it will host a free full domain web site with no ads, unlimited IP addresses and sub domains with CGI, PHP, PDQ, WTF and most of the rest of the alphabet... All from a 56k dial-up connection and without tying up your phone line.
P.S. Athlon!!

Didn't you know that STFU is the "Shut the Fu*k up" chip. Its clearly superior in technology putting intel and AMD in their places of inferiority.
But seriously:
Intel---Is better for 3-d gaming. If you can tell the difference between 130fps and 150fps(which I can't) then go for intel.
AMD--Better for real world applications and with its ties to DDR ram instead of RDRAM like intel, its alot cheaper. I think AMD is the better deal all-around.

Bruce

Well yours could probably be cooler if you had 6 fans too.
But 52º seems a bit warm. I'm guessing you must have an Athlon? They usually tend to run a little warmer.

They really need to cut the price. The Athlon 1.4GHZ performs much better then the Pentium 4 1.8GHZ and is half the price.

Last I checked, Intel has a huge market share (P3 and Xeon) in the server market, Athlon has very little, especially since they've only just recently introduced multiprocessing support.
I like Athlon. I have an Athlon 1GHz, it's a powerful and cheap cpu, but they are damn hot.. 8 secs without a heatsink and they fry themselves to death... I think only the latest Athlon 4 Palomino (are these out yet?) has a thermal diode that can monitor core temp, and throttle down or shutdown the cpu to avoid burnout... P3's have had this feature all along..

Although Intel controls most of the server market, around 80-85% of it, AMD controls more than 60% of the home computing market according to recent reports... this is growing as AMD is faster, cheaper and more efficent.

There was a mention of it on the AMD website not long ago.

August 7th, 2001, 21:09
Last I read from the AMD website is that they were planning on taking 30% of the desktop CPU market share by the end of this year.. I think they are almost there, right now..
Intel still controls a lot of the desktop market, although I've heard P4 sales sucked compared to their estimates (less than half sold than predicted). As for the server market, I think they have an 80% market share in servers with dual and quad cpus, but servers with 8 or more cpus, Intel has less than 50% market share. The bigger portion is controlled by Sun Ultrasparc.. Although that might have changed since Intel aquired Alpha technology last month..

Your motherboard doesn't support temperature read outs or you have an older driver. What is your motherboard?

Hmm then there should be some other problem. Check the help files or use some other software. Or try to upgrade your drivers for the motherboard.

General Pershing led the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe during WWI, all 2 million of them. So he is usually hailed as a hero from saving the civilized world from those horrible German Kaisers.

You'll be studying about him in US History Junior or Senior year (depending on how your high school does things).I haven't got a clue who those people are, I don't recall ever being taught any of that. Let's see, there was a war, over in or maybe around Europe, then another one... Hitler was involved, something about Nostradamus... the end. That covers WWI and WWII, nothing went on in between so that doesn't matter. :D

They can't even teach us WWI, WWII, and Korean war heros. Damn, Pershing defeated the Germans in WWI and served under government for a little while later as Defense Secretary. McGarther was the legend of WWII, but had a fallout with Truman during the Korean war.

That would depend on the amount of ram too, not just the cpu. P4's are better for gaming, but Athlons still out perform the Pentium in most programs. Intel is way overpriced though, with AMD you get much more bang for the buck.

Phrozen, perhaps rapmaster wants to stick with a crapy CPU like the P4, respectively anybody that buys a P4 either has a very low IQ, or likes to spend money on something not worth it. Like Disneyland.
Who the hell would have 3 256MB Sticks and 1 16MB stick of ram? Oh wait a minute... wait a minute... the limit on the board is probably 784... bingo.
Duron is a pretty good CPU, but the Thunderbird kicks ---. Let me do an analogy, the Thunderbird beats the P4 like the US is beating Afghanistan.
