Anyone know where i can get a forum script that i can edit and modify it to suit me.

Use the search feature at the top and search in the free services forum for ikonboard,phpbb or yabb.

are you allowed to call it your own script though? let me take a look at the GPL. i think you have to acknowledge that the structure of the script was not yours, but the modifications were.

No you aren't allowed to do that. Only way you can do it is make your own script.
